The nation's top childhood dream is for a happy family, marriage and children, a new survey showed today. The poll, commissioned by the National Lottery, asked 1,569 adults to recall the aspirations they had as children.
The wish for domestic bliss was most popular among women, with almost a third citing it as their childhood dream, but nearly one in five men said it was their top choice too.
In almost every region it was more popular than being a pop star, astronaut or train driver. Being an adventurer was the second most popular choice, followed by working as a teacher.
Sociologist Don Slater, who conducted the research, said: "It is positive to note that the dream for a family is still powerful enough to beat the desire to be David Beckham or a Spice Girl.
The desire to become a teacher has increased significantly across the generations. Only 5 per cent of the over-60s mentioned it as a childhood aspiration, but this rose to more than a quarter of dreamers aged 18-29. Dreams of being a doctor were also more likely among the younger generations.
