“turn up”是我们经常遇到的一个短语。如果你仅仅知道它的意思是“调高声音”还远远不够。 它还有很多其他的意思，快快一饱眼福吧！

1. cause sth to face or point upwards使某物面朝上或指向上方。如:

 He turned up his coat collar against the chill wind.   他竖起大衣领抵御寒风。

2. shorten a garment by folding it up at the bottom折起衣边，改短衣服。 如:

These trousers are too long; they need turning up.  这条裤子太长，需要改短些。

3. make one’s  appearance,  arrive（指人）来赴约、开会、出席某活动。如:

We arrange to meet at the cinema at 7:30, but he failed to turn up.  我们约定7点半在电影院见面，但他没来。

4. be found esp. by chance after being lost（指物）失去后偶然被发现或找到。如:

—Mom，have you seen my black pen？ I can’t find it anywhere. 妈，看到我那只黑钢笔了吗？我哪儿都找不着它。

—No, don’t bother to look for it; it will turn up some day.

没看见。别找了，说不定哪天它自己就出来了。

5. (of an opportunity) present itself,  happen  指机会出现，到 来，发生某情况 如:

He is still hoping something will turn up.  他仍在期待机会出现。
