Text 1

M: I heard Leo had a birthday party yesterday. What did you buy for him? A toy car?

W: No. He has too many toy cars. I bought him a sweater, and it fits him exactly!

Text 2

M: You know, Jason can play tennis, swim, play soccer and cook, but I can't.

W: It doesn't matter. I mean, you can play the guitar, play basketball and even speak three languages. You are great.

Text 3

W: Have you finished decorating your house yet?

M: No, I've only just finished the bathroom. It's taken such a long time. I've still got the kitchen and the living room to do.

Text 4

W: Bob, I had a letter from Susan yesterday, and she said that Mary would probably arrive today.

M: Well, I hope she drives carefully. You know how busy the traffic is at this time of year.

W: Oh, Mary's a good driver and very careful, too. I don't think we need to worry about her being careless.

Text 5

W: Hi, Louis. I got you the last T-shirt in the sales, and some shorts to match. I bought this sweater too, but I'm not sure if you like it.

M: The sweater looks great. I'd keep it. But the color of those shorts is bad. You should take them back.

W: Yeah. I guess you're right.

Text 6

W: Hello, this is Selinda.

M: Hi, this is Eric. I'm so sorry, but I'm going to be late for our appointment today. My bicycle broke down this morning, so I had to have it repaired in the shop. Now I'm waiting for a bus. I've been standing at the bus station for nearly half an hour.

W: It doesn't matter. I can meet you anytime today. And I'm also free on Thursday afternoon or Friday morning.

M: Actually, I think it would be better to meet today if we can. Maybe we can put off the appointment until 2 pm. Are you able to meet then?

W: Sure, that's fine. I'll see you then.

M: It's very kind of you. See you later!

Text 7

M: I'm dying to try the new chicken sandwich at Bluto's.

W: I had it yesterday. It was nothing special.

M: Really? So why is everyone talking about it like it's the best thing ever?

W: I mean it's good, the salad dressing in particular, but it's not worth waiting in line for half an hour again.

M: It comes with fries, right?

W: I got a salad, but I think you can get onion rings or fries as well.

M: I see. I'm still curious to try it.

Text 8

W: Could you spare me a few minutes, Cooper?

M: I'm rather busy, but what is it?

W: You know my husband is a builder. Just now I was told that he fell off the wall and was sent to the hospital. I have to look after him.

M: Sorry to hear that. What can I do for you?

W: My daughter is little and she needs to be taken care of.

M: Oh, I see. I will ask my wife to take care of her. You see, I will fly to Chicago and have an important signing ceremony.

W: Is your wife at home now?

M: Usually at this time, she goes shopping with friends or does the cleaning in our house. But today she is busy with her part-time work. However, I think she can take some time off.

W: You are so kind and I am very grateful.

Text 9

W: You have made lots of business trips since you worked in our company. What's your favorite means of transport, Jack?

M: Oh, there's no doubt about that, flying.

W: Why?

M: It's comfortable and our luggage gets taken care of.

W: I can't say I like it, because I think that my luggage may disappear or get sent off to the wrong place.

M: Well, not in my experience. Some people may hate the long wait, looking at the board and waiting for their flight. But I'm a fan. What's your favorite means of transport?

W: Well, I used to like the bus. It's flexible and cheap. Now I'm a great fan of rail travel and I've got a rail card. It gets me everywhere I want to go.

M: But it's slow.

W: Yes, but you'd hardly want to fly for a very short distance. My husband is a believer in exercise. He cycles everywhere. I know sometimes he's very tired but he's pretty fit.

M: I was just going to say how cold he'd get. But I believe he can't cycle to work when it's raining or snowing.

Text 10

M: Breaking news. We've just learned that Typhoon Harry has changed its path, and it is not heading straight for the city center. We expect to have winds of over 130 miles per hour. The typhoon should arrive at about 6:00 early in the morning. Please get prepared for it: board up your windows and make sure they are fastened; tie your boats tightly. All ship timetables will be canceled. If you are planning to leave, try to get out of town quickly before 3 am. For those of you staying in town, stay indoors and out of your cars. After the typhoon dies down, the communication company will be out to repair the cables as well as the signal tower. Don't touch any wires on the ground. If your Internet and electricity go off, please be patient. Focus on the radio for more information.
