1. apron n.围裙

be tied to somebody's apron-strings 

A:Peter is not a true man.
B:I can't agree with you more!
A:Before his marriage he was tied to his mother's apron-strings and now to his wife's.

A:皮的真不像个男子汉。
B:你说得太对了。
A:结婚前呢,他听她妈妈的;而现在,他又受他老婆摆布。 

2. belt n. 腰带

pull in (tight) one's belt 

A:My money is running out this month!
B:It's clear that you should have to pull in your belt for a few days.

A:我这个月的钱快花光了。
B:很明显,你得过几天紧日子了。

3. blanket n. 篮子

wet blanket 

A:What do you think of Nancy?
B:A wet blanket!She sulked during the entire movie yesterday.None of us could enjoy the show.

A:你觉得南希这个人怎么样?
B:扫兴。昨天看电影时她一直在生气,弄得我们谁都没看好电影。

4. boot n. (长统)靴;靴子

get the boot 

A:You looked depressed,John.What's matter?
B:I got the boot yesterday.
A:Why?
B:I was late for work again.But it was not my fault.There was a traffic jam!
A:Tough luck!

A:约翰,你看起来情绪不高。怎么了?
B:我昨天被解雇了。
A:为什么?
B:我又迟到了一次,可这不是我的错。路上塞车了!
A:真倒霉!

5. give somebody the boot

A:Foolish Kate!
B:Anything wrong?
A:Yes,she quarreled with her boss and she was given the boot.She should have known better than to quarrel with her superior.

A:凯特真蠢!
B:她出问题了吗?
A:是的,她和上司吵架了,因此被炒了鱿鱼。拓本该明智一点儿,不能和上司吵架。

6. cap n. 帽子

put on one's thinking cap 

A:Is the reprot important?
B:Yes,important enough to shape your future.
A:So I'll have to put on my thinking cap before writing anything down.

A:这个报告重要吗?
B:是的,重要到可以改变你的未来。
A:看来在动笔之前我必须得认真思考了。

7. cloth n. 布

cut one's coat according to one's cloth 

A:Can we buy a house of our own,dear?
B:Not now.My salary isn't large at the moment and we can't afford to get a loan from the bank.We must cut our coat according to our cloth.

A:亲爱的,我们能买套房子吗?
B:现在不行。我现在的工资不高,而且我们也贷不起银行的款。所以我们必须量力而为。


8. coattails n.(男)上衣后摆

on someone's coattails 

A:Paul is the first millionaire of us all.
B:But he's not a real success.His brother is.
A:Why do you say so?Both of them are very rich.
B:But he became an upstart on his brother's coattails.

A:保罗是我们中的第一个百万富翁。
B:但他并不是一个真正的成功者,他哥哥才是。
A:怎么这么说呢?他们两个都很富有嘛。
B:可是他是靠他哥哥的提携才发起来的。

9. dress n. 衣服

dress somebody down 

A:The boss looks cross.
B:Yes?
A:Nancy's work is a mess,you know.I'm afraid he'll dress her down.
B:That would be all right as long as he doesn't boot her out.

A:老板看起来情绪不太好。
B:怎么了?
A:你知道,南希工作干得一团糟,恐怕老板要训斥她了。
B:只要老板不开除她,挨训也无所谓了。

10. dress up 

A:You're so fond of dressing youself up?
B:Yes,I feel cool that way.
A:But it's a very casual gathering,not a formal occasion.

A:你怎么这么喜欢打扮?
B:打扮好了感觉很酷的。
A:可这个聚会很随便,不那么正式。
