M:Can you order a coffee for me?
W: It’s such a hot day. Wouldn’t you rather have a cold soda?
M: No. But they have iced coffee here. I’d love that.

W:The battery of my cell phone has died. I won’t be able to use my GPS to locate the park.
M: I will write down directions for you. It isn’t hard to find.
Text 3
M:Alice, I don’t know much about you. Where were you born?
W:I was born in London, but I spent most of my childhood in Hong Kong. And later my father went to New York for teaching, so I went there for college education.

M:We could go to a ball game this evening, or would you rather eat in a restaurant and then see a film?
W: To tell you the truth, I can’t really go anywhere this evening because I’m expecting an important phone call.
Text 5
W:Can you tell me where the bank is?
M: Go straight down the street, turn right at the second crossing. Then walk two blocks. You can’t miss it.
W: Can I take a bus?
M: Yes, take Bus No.4 and it’ll take you right there.

W:Welcome, is there anything I can do for you, sir?
M: Excuse me, I wonder if the T-shirt is with tiny computers.
W: Yeah, tiny computers are put into the T-shirt, and they do things like checking air temperature, switching lights on and off, and taking phone calls for you.
M: Can they take phone calls and get some messages?
W: Yeah, they can.
M: What? Through the T-shirt? You’re joking!
W: But I am serious. You can come here and have a try.

W:Are there running groups in this neighborhood? I’ve been wanting to run in the mornings, but I don’t like to do it alone.
M: Yeah, there is a group that meets at the park a few blocks from the university. They meet every Sunday morning.
W: I should join them. I wonder how far they run.
M: They usually run to the river, I think.
W: No, that would be about three miles. I usually only run two.
M: Well, maybe running with other people will give you more energy.

M:Excuse me, madam. I wonder if you could help me.

M: Can you tell me something about it?Is it interesting?
W: I’m afraid I’m not really sure because I have not had the time to see it.But my daughter was there the day before yesterday. She said it was really beautiful. You see, the show is one of the tourist attractions in our city. Go there and take a look, young man.

M:Can you help me?
W: With what?
M: Well, I’m looking for a flight.I want to visit my cousin in Paris. But tickets are so expensive! Do you have any idea how to find a good price?
W: Well, it can be expensive to fly on a Saturday or Sunday. Is it possible for you to travel during the middle of the week?
M: Yeah. I can travel any day. I will be on summer vacation.
W: Well then, it’s best to avoid weekends. When I flew to Madrid to visit my aunt last year, I went on a Tuesday.
M: OK.
W: When do you plan to visit your cousin, anyway?
M: In a month.
W: Well, don’t wait much longer to buy the ticket. If you purchase it less than two weeks before your travel date, you will pay a lot more.
M:Wow. Thanks for all the advice. Traveling is expensive, but at least when I get to Paris, I can stay in my sister’s house. She is on vacation right now.
Text 10
W: This summer I took part in a really interesting project. It’s called One-Day Clean-up and its aim is to clear the rubbish in the natural environment. I heard about it from my neighbors who used to take part some years ago. I thought it would be fun and persuaded a couple of my cousins to come along with me. But it wouldn’t matter if you took part on your own. You’d soon make friends with other people there. Most of the people there were teenagers. We were in an international group. Over half of the people there were from Australia, like me, but there were also people from China, Thailand and the USA. Most teams were working on the south coast of the country, but mine was working on the east. We had to pick up all the rubbish that we could find at the seaside. The project has made me realize how important it is for everyone to protect the environment. I’m determined now to get my family to recycle as much as possible. It’ll be worth it if we can make our seas safer for all those beautiful sea animals. Next year the focus on that day will be on getting rubbish out of rivers. |
