Text 1
W:Good morning. This is Jane Fonda. I have to cancel my appointment with Dr. Smith at four tomorrow.
M:OK.
Text 2
M:My wife wants to buy a laptop, my son wants an iPhone 6, and I want to buy a mountain bike.
W:If you buy all of them at present, we’ll give you a washing machine.
Text 3
W:I heard you flew to London last Friday.
M:Yes, I went there to visit my parents. They moved there two years ago from New Zealand. And next week I’m going to Chicago for business.
Text 4
W:These days I can’t sleep well without sleeping pills. My doctor asks me to have a rest.
M:Yes, you should. And I think you can listen to some soft music before sleep.
Text 5
M:Good morning, Mrs. Right, my shower isn’t working.
W:I’ve called Mr. Clark to repair it, but his daughter said he had taken his father to hospital. Maybe I should call another repairman Peter.
Text 6
W:How about your summer vacation, John?
M:I planned to go to Xi’an, and my mom suggested that I visit my aunt in Chongqing. However, you know, it was so hot this summer. So I took a trip to Harbin to get away from the heat. What about you? You had decided to go to Shanghai before the holidays began.
W:No, because my parents were both on business then in Singapore. I had to give up my plan.
M:It was a pity. And what did you do for this summer?
W:Actually, my vacation was pretty meaningful, I think. I spent the entire holidays accompanying my grandparents in the countryside. I decide to take a long tour with them in a cool place next summer.
Text 7
W:I heard you have got a job in Samsung.
M:Yeah, Judy. Last year I saw an advertisement in a paper and I applied for the job. I’m very lucky to get a job in the company.
W:Do you enjoy your work?
M:Most of the time, but it can be hard sometimes.
W:You mean you have a heavy work schedule.
M:That’s right. I get up and go to work at 6 am every day, and I only get 45 minutes for lunch.
W:So, why did you apply for such a demanding job?
M:Well, the salary is attractive, and the employees are given health insurance benefits.
W:Oh, I see. That’s the highlight.
M:Now you know why I wanted to work for Samsung!
Text 8
M:Excuse me, do you know where the visa office is?
W:Yes. Are you applying to study or work abroad?
M:I want to study abroad.
W:Which university have you been admitted to? What do you want to study?
M:Harvard University. I decide to study English literature.
W:Have you got your visa yet?
M:Not yet. I have an interview with the visa official today.
W:I see. Is it your first interview?
M:No, it is my fourth interview. My brother got his visa to Britain for the first time. And my classmate got his visa to Australia for the second time.
W:What has happened to you?
M:I was denied a visa. I want to work in America after graduation.
W:I see. Well, good luck!
Text 9
M:Hey, Tina. What are you doing?
W:I am just reading some things online about holidays. Nothing special. Why?
M:I was wondering if you could help me with something...if you have time, I mean.
W:Sure. I’m never too busy to do you a favor.
M:It’s the new employee — Sandy. It’s her birthday today, and the office got a cake and ice cream for her. But I just learned that she can’t eat chocolate.
W:And everything is chocolate, huh?
M:Right. So, if you don’t mind, could you run to the store and get something else for her?
W:Which store? I know there is a cake store on Manor Road, but that’s far away.
M:The supermarket on Leywick Street would have ice cream.
W:I don’t like that store. I’ll go to the store on Abbey Road. It’s close, and I think they might have cakes, too.
M:Thanks so much.
Text 10
Fast food workers in 58 cities in the USA did not go to work on Thursday. They went on strike because they wanted more money. The workers currently are given a small salary. The wage was set at$7.25 an hour in 2009 and has not changed since then. Many workers say they cannot afford to live on that. The price of everything has gone up but their wages have stayed the same for years. The workers want$15 an hour, which is almost double their current rate. Julio Wilson, a cashier at a pizza restaurant, told the BBC he earned$9 an hour. He said that wasn’t enough to support himself and his five-year-old daughter. McDonald’s and Burger King both spoke about the strike. They said they did not make decisions about how much to pay workers in most of their restaurants. They said each restaurant was an independent business and the manager decided how much to pay the staff. America’s National Restaurant Association said the wages were low because the staff were young and had little work experience. It said, "Only five percent of restaurant employees earn such a small wage and they are mainly working part-time and half are teenagers."
