Text 1
W:Darling, will you help me get back the clothes on the line?
M:OK. I’ll do that as soon as I finish mopping the floor. It’s almost over.
Text 2
M:The boss said we had only one day to send all the thank-you cards.
W:Don’t worry. We have sent 100 cards, two-thirds of the total.
Text 3
M:This place is so crowded and noisy! How long on earth shall I have to wait?
W:I’m sorry, sir. Just a minute, there will be a table available.
Text 4
W:It will be easier for you to persuade people if you don’t look so nervous.
M:I know, but I really can’t change the way I feel.
Text 5
M:Why don’t you wait here a few minutes and I’ll get my car?
W:No, thank you. I’d better take the bus home.
Text 6
W:Do you have any ideas for Father’s Day, Tommy?
M:When is it?
W:Tomorrow.
M:Sorry, I totally forgot. Well, I think we can cook a loving breakfast for him.
W:That’s great. Anything else?
M:Um, maybe we can get him a ticket to a concert?
W:Come on. Dad has no interest in music.
M:Yes, you are right. How about a ticket to the baseball match?
W:Good, I’m sure Dad will like it.
Text 7
W:Hi, Frank. Do you want to go hiking in the park with Alice and me this weekend?
M:Don’t count me in. I would rather stay at home alone.
W:Why?
M:I just don’t like the park. I will never go there again. In fact, I intend to make a complaint. Do you know the park’s hotline?
W:It’s 10045. Tell me what happened.
M:I went there yesterday afternoon. The terrible attitude of the staff destroyed my mood completely.
W:No wonder we couldn’t find you when we got together to play golf yesterday afternoon.
M:I regret not going with you.
Text 8
W:I will graduate next month, but I haven’t found any job yet. It’s really tough to make a living.
M:Don’t be that upset. Take it easy. Everything will work out in the end.
W:I’ve sent out eight applications but I haven’t got even one reply. It really discourages me.
M:Have you ever tried the Internet? Many firms may put their want ads there.
W:That idea has never come to my mind. Will it work?
M:Yes. You just surf the Internet, find a proper job-hunting website and you may get all the information you want there. And you can send emails to the companies.
W:That sounds easy.
M:You can just try. You’ll lose nothing. But don’t put all your chances there. You still have to go to the job market if it doesn’t work out well.
W:Thank you for your suggestion. It really helps me a lot.
M:It is nothing. Good luck.
Text 9
W:Good morning, Brownton Swimming Pool.
M:Hello, I’d like some information about the water polo club.
W:We have an under-14 club, an under-16 club, an under-18 club and an adult club. How old are you?
M:I’m 15.
W:So you want the under-16 club?
M:Yes. When do they train?
W:Let’s see, they train two evenings a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30 pm-8 pm. And matches are on Saturday mornings.
M:Great! What do I have to do to join?
W:You have to come to the swimming pool and complete a form. You need to bring a photograph too.
M:OK. Thanks.
Text 10
When my father was celebrating a birthday, I prepared a surprise gift that he would never forget. As he was approaching 60, I had a fun idea: What if I could get the memories people had of him, put each one into an envelope — 60 in total — and have him open them, one by one, on his birthday? So I wrote an e-mail to family and friends, explaining my idea.
I sent the e-mail and waited. And then the replies started coming in and I was very, very surprised. There were so many memories, and they were all so lovely. They came from every decade between now and the day my dad was born. They came from my mother, my brothers and sisters, my grandma, my dad’s friends from high school, from people who hadn’t seen my dad in 40 years, from people I myself hadn’t even told. They typed them and handwrote them. They mailed them and e-mailed them.
The night before Dad’s birthday, my sister and I stayed up late, putting everything together with some envelopes. The next morning, after breakfast and presents and cake, we gave the pile of envelopes to him. "Just one more thing for you," we said. It took him a long time to open them and read. Each one was a brief ticket to another time, a leap backward over years and decades. There was a lot of laughter and a few tears, too.
