Text 1
M:I suppose your second-hand TV set cost about $60.
W: Sixty? Actually it was double that price.
Text 2
M:Oh, it's 39℃! How long is this hot weather going to last?
W: It's only June. Next month should be even hotter.
M: Well, I should buy an air conditioner right now.
Text 3
M: Gee, it's so hot here. Does anyone know where the fan is?
W: No use. The fan is OK, but there's no electricity.
Text 4
W: I heard that Joseph quarrelled with the boss this morning. Do you know what happened?
M: I would also have quarrelled with the boss if he had criticized me so seriously for being two minutes late.
Text 5
W:What brings you to Smithville? Are you an actor?
M:No. I'm a reporter. I'm writing a story about the theater.
Text 6
M: It's a beautiful day, isn't it?
W: Yes, nice and sunny.
M: It's much better than last week. It was too hot then.
W: I'm glad that summer is over. I like autumn best.
M: So do I. It's neither too hot nor too cold. The sky is clear and blue.
W: It's a good time to have a picnic. Do you want to have one this weekend?
M: I'd love to, but I think it's going to rain. The weatherman said it would.
W: I don't think he's right. It hasn't rained for a week.
M: But he is usually right in his weather news.
W: I'm sure we'll have fine weather for our picnic.
Text 7
W:We're here! Ah, the Grand Canyon of Arizona.
M: I can't believe it took us three hours to drive here. I thought it would only take two.
W: I've waited for five years to see this wonderful place.
M: Why did you wait for five years? You could have come here at any time.
W: I was always busy running my company. Besides, that was because you were away in the army for five years. I told you we would come here together.
M: Yes, I remember now. I'm so glad to finish my time in the army.
Text 8
M: Have you got a minute, Susan? I'd like to have a word with you.
W: Yes, of course.
M: I thought we arranged to meet last night.
W: Er. . . yes. I'm really sorry about it. I was just coming to see you to explain this.
M: Well, Susan, because I had another important appointment last night and if I'd known you were not coming, I'd have gone out.
W: I'm so sorry, but I couldn't help it.
M: You could have phoned me and cancelled the appointment.
W: I'm awfully sorry, but before I left the dormitory, my aunt phoned and told me that my brother had been involved in an accident. I was so worried that I forgot about this matter.
M: Oh, well. I didn't realize it was so serious. Is your brother all right?
W: He's still in hospital.
M: I'm sorry for the way I shouted at you.
W: That's all right. If I were in your place, I would also be angry.

W:Good afternoon, what can I do for you?
M: Well, I'm trying to buy a present for my mother's birthday. But I don't know what to buy.
W: I think a fine handbag would be a good gift.
M: I don't want to get her a handbag.
W: How about a nice piece of jewelry?
M: That's a good idea, but I'm afraid I can't afford that.
W: That is a problem. Now let me think. Something more practical is what you are after, isn't it?
M: That's right. My mother likes doing things with her hands. She makes a lot of her own clothes.
W: Well, we do have some nice dress material.
M: Could I have a look, please?
W: Of course. Here is some. Beautiful colors and designs, aren't they?
M: All seem to be good. Oh, I think I should get some material for a skirt. Could you give me a suggestion about the color and the design?
W: With pleasure.
Text 10
M:Josh and I have been best friends for over a year. We hang out together almost every day. However, about a month ago, we had a big fight. That day I went to Josh's house to watch a movie with him. But Josh said he wanted to go and watch his elder sister's performance at school. When I asked if I could go too, Josh said no. I felt hurt. I asked why I couldn't go, and Josh said,"I want to do something without you!" I ran home feeling sad. When my mother saw me, she asked why I was blue. I told her everything. She said, "If you really get along with someone and have a good time when he's around, you will want to spend all your free time with him. But spending every single day with someone can be boring. Sometimes you both need some time of your own. " Hearing what my mother said, I knew that there wasn't anything wrong with our friendship. I also learned that Josh and I shouldn't spend every single minute together. |
