W: Where are you going?
M: I have to walk the dog. It’s my mom’s dog, and I must take it for a walk every day before dark.
Text 2
M: We haven’t gone to the beach for a while. Almost a month, I think. Let’s go there this weekend.
W: That’s a great idea. The home routine is driving me crazy.
Text 3
W: Something’s wrong with my computer. All I get is a black screen.
M: Don’t worry, Linda. This once happened to my computer. My hard drive crashed. I’m going to call a friend to help you. He’s good at computers.
Text 4
W: Did you wipe your feet, Adam? Look at the mud on the carpet.
M: Oh, sorry. I’ll clean it now.
Text 5
W: This is a huge library. It has lots of rooms and space.
M:But be careful and keep your belongings close to you. Don’t think a library would be safe from thieves.
Text 6
W: Excuse me, can you tell me the way to Waterloo station?
M: Yes. Walk down this road, and take the first turning on the left. Then walk until you come to the river and...
W: The river?
M: Yes. You can’t see it very clearly from here. When you come to it, there is a bridge. Just walk across it. Follow the sign that says "To Waterloo station". You can’t miss it.
W: And is it very far? I mean, how long does it take to walk there?
M: About fifteen minutes if you walk quickly.
Text 7
W: Are you looking for part-time or full-time employment?
M: To start with, I would like something part-time with the hope that it can develop into something full-time.
W: So you are interested in being with a company in the long term?
M: Yes, that’s right. I like this city very much and would like to make my home here.
W: Here is an application form. Please fill it out and give it to me after you’ve finished it. As for your resume and reference, you can email them to us later.
M: OK. Thank you very much.
Text 8
W: Would you like to go to the animal shelter with me?
M: I’d love to, but why do you want to go there?
W: I want to get a dog for my son Tony.
M: That will make him happy. What kind of dog do you plan to get?
W: I’ll get him one of those little dogs. One that won’t grow too big or eat too much.
M: Do you know which one he would like?
W: Oh, yes, I took him there yesterday. He showed me one that he really liked.
M: I bet you had to drag him away.
W: Yeah, he wanted to take it home yesterday. But I didn’t have enough money in hand.
Text 9
W: What do you do for a living, Barry?
M: I’m a repairman; I work in a car repair shop on Oxford Street.
W: A repairman? You must do a lot of work and get very dirty.
M: Yes. I do lots of work. Every day I fix cars and it takes a long time to get clean after work.
W: Repairing cars is really an interesting job. How many cars do you think you fix in a day?
M: On average I probably fix about seven cars every day, and I do get tired. By the way, what sort of job do you have, Ms. Jones?
W: I don’t have a job at the moment. You see, I’m at college learning English.
M: Hey, look at that sport car. That is exactly the kind of car that I want once I get a good job. I want mine to be red though.
W: But that car costs a fortune.
M: It does not hurt to set high expectations. Maybe one day I will make a lot of money, and I might surprise you.
Text 10
Colleen was in a hurry, which made her driving even more careless than usual. Her friend Simon had already reminded her many times that she should have stopped at stop signs. "If the police catch you rushing through a stop sign like that, they’ll give you a ticket for running a stop sign," he said. Colleen replied, "I know, but I never do it when they’re around, so how can they catch me?" Simon was about to tell her that the police have a habit of suddenly appearing out of nowhere, but Colleen told him to stop thinking so negatively.
Colleen needed to drop off a package at the post office. It had to get to New York by Wednesday. She left the freeway and pulled up at the stop sign. One car was in front of her car. Colleen looked to the right and then to the left. No cars were coming. She thought it was safe to pull out. So she started her car again. The next thing that happened was that she crashed her car into the car in front, because it was still sitting there. The driver got out of his car, walked back to look at the damage to his new car, and started shouting at Colleen.
