Text 1
W:I'm not sure whether to buy a new car or simply find a second-hand one.
M:If I were you, I would buy a new one. Repairing cars will cost you a lot.
Text 2
W:When do you plan to do your homework?
M:I think I'm going to do my homework after I watch the World Cup. I don't think I'll be able to concentrate  until the game is over.
Text 3
M:So, tell me about the movie.
W:Oh, it's one of those cowboy stories. A cowboy rides into town on his horse and rides out with a girl.
M:Sounds like quite a story.
W:Yeah, really.
Text 4
W:How is the exam? Did every one of the 50 students pass it?
M:No, no. The exam is difficult. Only 10% got an A, and 30% failed to pass it.
Text 5
W:Donald, don't interrupt me. I am typing a paper.
M:Mom, we've run out of soap in the washing room.
Text 6
M:Do you belong to a health club?
W:Not right now. I used to go to Metropolitan Health Club on Third Street. I thought it was great because it was so cheap, but I stopped going there.
M:Really? I heard it is pretty popular.
W:That was the problem. It is too popular. It is always full of people. Sometimes I had to wait to use the machines. Maybe I need a quiet one.
Text 7
W:Got up late as usual? Or failed to catch the bus?
M:Sorry, madam. Let me explain.
W:What's the story then? I'm listening.
M:I got up early this morning. Getting ready, I rushed to the bus stop. On my way there, I noticed a crowd of people standing around an old man. He was seriously ill. I called a taxi and took him to hospital. After the old man's son arrived, I hurried to school. Luckily the kind taxi driver gave me a free ride.
W:What a kind-hearted boy! We are proud of you.
Text 8
W:Hi,Tom. What did you do last Saturday?
M:I camped out by joining a friend-making group.
W:Oh,really? It is so-called "Flash Play".
M:Yeah.I had doubt about it before. But now,I think it is a good way to make friends.
W:Of course. Some of my friends have such experiences. But I prefer to go out by myself.
M:Ha-ha,you are out. Now everyone not only wants to save money but also wants to go out for fun. "Flash Play" can keep your money in your pocket.
W:Really? That's what I need most because I am always running out of money.
M:And if you are upset, maybe that can make you happy.
Text 9
W:You look down..Is there anything wrong?
M:I failed in the speech contest in our school.
W:Why? Was it because the topic was too difficult?
M:No. It was about public transport. I didn't know much about the topic at first, but I'd prepared really well for it.
W:I know. You even didn't play basketball during that period in order to prepare for it.
M:But my efforts didn't pay off.
W:So what happened? Were you nervous?
M:Yes. I've never taken part in such a big contest before.
W:Don't worry. I'm sure you'll do well next time. So how did our classmate John do in the contest? He won a writing contest last year.
M:He failed, too.
W:Why? Was he not ready for it?
M:Actually he prepared well for it — we prepared together — but he had a terrible cold.
W:What a pity!
Text 10
M:I had to spend a week or so in hospital last year. A small ear infection turned into some big problems with my immune system. I was sad the whole night after my doctor gave me the news that still more tests would be needed, which meant another few days in an uncomfortable bed. As I thought about it, the pain began again, and I was sure that my condition might only become more serious. At the time I began to wonder if I would see my own home again, my best friend from high school stopped by. She always had a great joke on the tip of her tongue. Even now I can't help but smile when I think about her. Two hours after she left, I felt great. I had no pain when I woke up the next morning, and on that evening, all of my test results were positive. A miracle? Actually, yes. Many studies have indicated that humor has interesting healing power. One way that humor can help to heal is that it changes our view on life. Suddenly, our problems don't seem quite as bad. Humor allows one to distance himself from a painful physical or mental situation.
