M: I’m in a hurry. Could I have a piece of apple pie and a coffee please?
W: Certainly, sir. Would you like your pie served with cream or cheese?
M: Oh, I’ll take it just as it is. I really need to watch my weight.

M: I really like this pair of glasses but I can get them cheaper from an online shop, or even a supermarket.
W: Yes, but we’re professional. It’s best to get your glasses here, where your eyes were tested.

M: Mom, have you seen my new white jeans?
W: I put them in the washing machine. They were dirty. Your black ones are in the drawer and your blue ones are in the cupboard.
M: I’m next to the cupboard, so I’ll wear the ones in there.

W: I miss the long hair I had when I was 13. I’m going to grow it out again.
M: Your hair grows fast, so it won’t take long to get it long again. But I really think you look better with short hair.

W: That singer you like will perform at the stadium in January. Are you going?
M: I’d like to, but the tickets are so expensive and I did see him in London and Birmingham.
W: You also saw him in Manchester. We went with you.

W: Isn’t it interesting that some things have good meanings in some cultures and bad meanings in others?
M: What do you mean?
W: Well, for example, if you give somebody the “thumbs up” sign here in Scotland, it means “good” or “OK”. But if you do it in some parts of Italy or Eastern Europe, it means something bad.
M: What does it mean?
W: Trust me, you don’t want to know! But that reminds me...when Indians shake their head from side to side, it means “yes”.
M: Wow, that’s confusing. What if you want to say “Hello” or “Goodbye” there?
W: I think you just wave normally.

M: It’s great that you can scan a bike with your phone and ride it anywhere you want. But abandoned bikes are a real problem.
W: I know. The area outside the subway station is terrible because of them.
M: The shopping mall and the park don’t have as many, but they are still a problem.
W: It’s such a shame because it’s so much better than the way things used to be. Do you remember when we were kids, Mom and Dad bought us second-hand bikes? They were all that our parents could afford, and they made the neighbors’ children envious.
M: Yes, and now you can just pick up a new one whenever you like and abandon it wherever you want.
W: People should have a more responsible attitude when using the bikes.

W: OK, Neil. I am a student journalist from senior grade. I know you just came to this new school a few months ago. Can I interview you for the school newspaper?
M: OK. I’m ready.
W: Neil, how do you usually get to school in the morning?
M: I usually go to school with my friends. We live very close to the school, so we don’t have to take the bus. But on Fridays, my mother drives me to school.
W: Good answer. What are your favorite subjects?
M: I really enjoy physical education class. I love to go outside, play games, and have fun. I like English, too, but some of the words are hard to read and the grammar is hard, too. Science is the most difficult for me.
W: That’s OK. You’re doing well. One last question: How do you feel about going to school in America?
M: I like it here. At first I was scared, but I like my friends and my teachers. I hope that one day I can speak English fluently.
W: Well, I believe you will. Keep up the good work, Neil.

W: I want a cheeseburger for lunch, and maybe some French fries and a milkshake.
M: That’s way too much food, Lucy. I’m going to order something healthy with vegetables.
W: Why are you now eating healthier food, Russell? Are you trying to lose weight, or do you feel sick?
M: I feel fine. I am actually thinking of participating in a race this autumn and I want to be as fit as possible.
W: That’s a long time from now. Will changing what you eat actually affect your performance? My brother only eats fried food and he plays soccer all the time without a problem.
M: What you eat can change a lot of things, but it also affects everyone differently. Your brother is five years younger than us, so he still can process food quickly. Now that we are older, I really feel different when I eat bad food.
W: So because you feel better, you will be able to run much faster? Is it because you will be lighter from eating less?
M: It’s more like because I feel better all the time, I am able to work out and train for a longer time. If I train harder, I will be able to get better results and become faster than before.
W: Having the energy to do that is important, but I want to enjoy my meal more than anything else.

According to an article in The Telegraph, learning a foreign language is not only great for your resume and for traveling, but also will make you smarter and better at coming to a decision. The article refers to several studies from medical journals published by the top universities in the U.S. These studies have shown that the brains of people who speak more than one language function differently from those who only speak one language. There are many benefits of speaking more than one language. For example, you become better at performing more than one task at a time. Your memory improves and your ability to observe things gets better. You can still gain those benefits as an adult but not as strongly as a younger person could. At the same time, the more languages you know, the stronger those benefits become no matter how old you are.
Since several informed studies are mentioned in the article, it shows that the conclusions made about learning different languages are truthful. It is important to have different views when people are discussing a topic. The more scientific studies are repeated, the more accurate they are. If a scientist only tried their experiment one time, they cannot ensure the accuracy of their results.
