Text 5.
M: How was the welcome party last night, Maria?
W: It was terrible! I was invited for half past seven, but I was fifteen minutes late.
Text 6.
M: How about going to Rockin' Restaurant? The food there is delicious.
W: The food's fine, but those awful pictures on the walls just make me sick.
Text 7.
W: Hey, look! Whose schoolbag do you think this is?
M: It might be Rita's. She was at the picnic, wasn't she?
Text 8.
M: At a Chinese dinner table, the oldest person is expected to eat first. And it's impolite to point at others with your chopsticks.
W: The same goes for Korea. It's also rude to stick your chopsticks into your food.
Text 9.
M: Aren't you going to the concert in the park tonight?
W: Even if I didn't have to finish my science project, I'd rather spend the evening in bed playing games.
M: I see. Have a good day!
Text 10.
W: I watched the new romantic movie yesterday. It was so moving that I was almost in tears as I saw the ending.
M: Romantic movies are not for me. I prefer exciting movies that allow me to shut off my brain and relax.
Text 11.
W: So, Jay, can you tell us something about your life as a famous singer? Our readers are quite interested in that.
M: I hardly have any private time, since there are always guards around me.
Text 12.
M: The Great Pyramid of Khufu is such a miraculous achievement. I wonder how the ancient people managed to build it without any modern tools.
W: Me, too. It has four sides and each side is about 230 meters wide and 147 meters high. The biggest stone weighs more than 15 tons. The builders must have been hard-working. But it is a pity that the way they built it remains a mystery.

Text 13.
M: You look worried, Holly. What's the matter?
W: Well, it was Halloween. So my friends and I had a haunted house party last night.
M: So what happened?
W: Just now I found that I had taken someone else's handbag by mistake. What should I do?
M: Take it easy. Let's look through the bag to see what's in it, and then we may know who it belongs to.
W: OK. Look! A camera. Is it made in the U.S.?
M: Yes, though it is a Japanese brand. And a gold ring. The owner must be rich. Then it can't be Jean. She could hardly make ends meet as a waitress.
W: Well, actually she has found a new job as a banker, so I guess a gold ring is not a big deal for her now. But she likes clothes that have bright colors, so this white cotton blouse can't belong to her.
M: Oh, look what I've found! The guest list of the party!
W: So it must be Ruby's! She was the organizer.
听下面一段对话,回答16至18三个小题。
Text 14.
M: Mom, I'll hang out with my friends after dinner.
W: I see. Remember to get back by 10: 00.
M: Come on, mom! I'm not a teenage boy. I should be allowed to stay out late sometimes.
W: But your dad and I are used to going to bed early. We're worried about your safety, too.
M: In that case, I'll just move out and rent a house.
W: I don't think that's a bright idea. You aren't good at taking care of yourself, are you?
M: Mom, all things are difficult before they are easy. It's true that I cannot manage my life very well now, but I should be given a chance to learn how to do it.
W: But renting a house will certainly cost a lot of money. Are you sure you can afford it?
M: I can share the house with my friend so that we can both save money.
W: Well, honey. I have nothing against your moving out, but I do hope you could think twice before you make the final decision. Enjoy yourself tonight, but don't forget you must get up early to work tomorrow.
听下面一段对话,回答19至22四个小题。
Text 15.
W: Hello, Carson College. May I help you?
M: Yes, I am looking for information on courses in computer programming.
W: Do you want a day or evening course?
M: Well, it would be an evening course since I work during the day.
W: Uh-huh, have you taken any courses in data processing?
M: No.
W: Oh, well, I'm afraid you have to take one before you can take computer programming.
M: I see. Well, when is it given? I hope it's not on Thursdays.
W: Now, there is a class that meets on Monday evenings, and lasts almost three hours, from seven to nine forty-five.
M: Well, I could manage that. How many weeks does the course last?
W: Twelve. You start the first week in September and finish, let me see...just before Christmas, December the 21st.
M: And how much is the course?
W: That's 300 dollars, including the necessary computer time.
M: Where do I go to register?
W: Registration is on the 2nd and 3rd of September, in Main Hall.
M: Oh, I know how to get there. Thanks!

Text 16.
Amelia Earhart was the first woman to fly the Atlantic Ocean alone. In 1932, Amelia set off from North America in a small plane. Several hours later, she ran into bad weather. To make things worse, one part of the plane failed so she didn't know how high she was flying at night. Just before the daybreak, Amelia noticed fire coming from the engine. There was nothing to do except to keep going and to hope. In the end, she reached Ireland and was warmly welcomed in Europe for the courage she had shown. After returning to the United States, she was honored by the president at a special dinner. In the years that followed, she made several flights across the United States, and each time she set a new record for flying time. Amelia Earhart made these flights to show that women had a place in flying, and that air travel was useful.
