W: Aled, you've just raised an amazing amount of money for your local park. How did all this come about?

M: One day, I was doing my homework and my dad was watching TV. Then an item came on the local news about the park. They said on the news that the park was old, but the council couldn't afford to replace it.

W: So you wanted to find the money.

M: Yes. My dad told me his school did a sponsored walk for charity when he was a kid. He said it was one of the best ways of raising money, so I took Dad's idea and changed it slightly, coming up with the idea of a fun run in fancy dress. Soon, many of my friends joined me.

W: How did the idea work?

M: Well, there were two main ways. You could get your friends and family to sponsor you, either per kilometer or for your costume. My grandma sponsored me ￡5 per kilometer. I ran 5 kilometers and got ￡25.  My grandpa also sponsored me. He said, “If you dress up like a Spider-Man and run round, I'll give you ￡30.”

W: You reached your target then?

M: Actually we did better than that. We needed ￡6,000. As you know, the final total was ￡6,750, so there was plenty for the new playground.

Good evening, everyone. Today is Sunday, May 7. I'm your old friend Henry Brown. Now let's learn about a whale trapped in an illegal fishing net yesterday. The whale was spotted by a ship. A diver on the ship dived into the sea to help. He discovered the whale was completely trapped in the red fishnet so she could not even open her mouth. After initial attempts to cut the net from a boat failed, some divers from two diving centres joined the effort. For the first ten seconds the whale got a bit nervous, but then she knew the divers were there to help her and she just relaxed. The rescuers started working from the front of her mouth backwards. They kept cutting and cutting. Finally, the whale struggled a while and then set herself free. But she didn't leave immediately. She stayed for a bit to regain her strength in the company of the divers. Then before she left, she even gave what looked like a little thank-you sign.That's all for tonight's program.
