W: No thanks. I just came back from the market myself.

M: Oh, honey! I can’t find my new clothes for today’s party. Have you seen them anywhere?
W: You are always forgetting where you put your clothes. They are on the bag by the TV set. You put them there last night.

W: My hand still hurts from falling on the ice yesterday. I wonder if I broke something.
M: I’m no doctor, but it’s not black and blue or anything. Maybe you just need to rest it for a few days.

W: This room looks really dirty. I’m going to clean the window.
M: It’s better to do that after we’ve finished painting the walls.
W: But I must clean the floor before we start painting.
M: OK. You do that and I’ll get the paint ready.

W: Do you have another one of these pink T-shirts? This is a size 42. I need a smaller one.
M: Here’s a size 40. The size 38 will be too small for you.
W: OK. Thanks. I’ll take it.

W: Hey, Steve! Over here! Don’t you remember me?
M: Oh, wow! You’re Lucy Green, aren’t you?
W: That’s right. We used to be in the same class in middle school in New York for two years, right?
M: Yeah.  But you were really quiet at that time, weren’t you?
W: Yeah. I wasn’t very outgoing.
M: But you were always friendly. Do you still play basketball?
W: Yes, but I’m more interested in music these days. I play the piano, and I often go to concerts.  How about you? Do you still like playing tennis?
M: Of course. It’s still my favorite activity!

W: Rod, it’s lovely to see you again.
M: How was your trip?
W: Fun but tiring. Milan is interesting. It’s bigger than I expected, noisier and dirtier, too.
M: And Florence? What do you think of Florence?
W: Well. I didn’t go there. Have you been there?
M: No. I’ve never been to Italy. I’d really like to go to Rome. Well, the car is in the car park. Is this all your luggage?
W: Yes. But the suitcase is very heavy.    ?
M: Barbara. What’s in it? Books or stones?
W: Just 20 pairs of shoes.

W: Good morning, Lewis Brothers.
M: Hello, it’s Oliver Martin here. Can I speak to Mark Hanson?
W: I’m afraid he isn’t in the office now. Can I take a message?
M: Yes, I’m phoning from Worldwide Holidays. I’ve made an order recently. Mark was dealing with it. There were several things, mainly brochures and price lists. We’ve received those and they are fine. But we haven’t got the invitation cards that were ordered.
W: When did you order them?
M: It was about half a month ago, I think. But it’s rather urgent now. They’re for a business reception at the end of the month.
W: We’re quite busy at the moment, but I’m sure he’ll get them to you tomorrow. Is that OK?
M: That’s great! The amount was originally 30, but can you make that 40?
W: Yes. Fine.

M: How’s your English class going, Professor Smith?
W: Oh, not so well. It’s a conversation class. I try to choose interesting topics, but only a couple of students speak. I really like my students, but I’m just not sure how to get the others to talk more. Maybe because it’s a morning class, they are all sleepy.
M: What countries are your students from?
W: A lot of different countries, actually.
M: I think it may be a cultural difference. I had the same problem in my class before. In many cultures, people aren’t used to giving their opinions so directly.
W: Wow. I never thought about that. What should I do, then? We can’t just have a silent conversation class.
M: Why don’t you talk about different conversation styles in class? The students can share communication styles of their cultures.
W: That could be really interesting. Thanks for the suggestion.

Good morning, and welcome to Alaska Airlines Flight 274 to San Diego. Some of you will be staying with us as we continue on to Las Vegas. We will be taking off from Vancouver shortly, with a flight time of three hours. That’s shorter than the three and a half hours we were expecting, thanks to totally clear skies and some winds behind us. We’ll be landing on San Diego at 11:40 a.m. If you have a window seat on the left side of the airplane, you’ll get to enjoy some amazing views of Mount Rainier, Mount Hood, and Mount Shasta along the way. Those of you on the right side will get to look at the Pacific Ocean as we’re coming near to San Diego. This flight will have two drink services and one snack service. Please see the menu in the seat pocket in front of you for juice, sodas, tea, and snacks. We hope you enjoy the food and flight.
