 One of the most powerful parts in body language is eye contact. Americans are careful about how and when they meet one another's eyes. In conversation, eye contact lasts only about a second before one or both people look away. When two Americans look searchingly into each other's eyes, emotions become stronger and the relationship becomes closer. Therefore, they carefully avoid this, except in proper situations. Proper behavior on the street in the United States requires a nice balance of attention and inattention. You are supposed to look at a passer-by just enough to show that you're aware of his presence. If you look too little, you appear too proud. And if you look too much, you're too curious. Usually what happens is that people watch each other until they are about eight feet apart, at which point both cast down their eyes. In parts of the Far East it is impolite to look at the other person at all during conversation. In England, the polite listener stares at the speaker carefully as a sign of interest. But that says nothing to Americans, who expect the listener to nod or to say something softly, such as “mm” and “uh huh”.
