Module 11 Way of life
1.M: Betty, what should people in your country do when they meet for the first time?
W: They should shake hands.
2.W: I think a chess set is a good present for an eight-year-old boy.
M: I don't agree. I think a cap is better.
3.W: What's the best present you have?
M: A toy train. I got it on my ninth birthday.
4.W: What should I buy for my brother as his birthday gift? A baseball cap?
M: That's special.
5.W: It's impolite to be late. So you'd better go to the cinema early.
M: The film begins at 7 pm. I plan to be there fifteen minutes early.
M: What is your New Year's resolution this year, Mary?
W: I'm going to work at a school because I want to be a teacher.
M: That sounds good. Where are you going to work, in Guangzhou or Hefei?
W: In Hefei. I like this city very much. What about you, Mark?
M: I want to be a pilot because I want to travel around the world.
W: So we should work hard to make our dreams come true.
M: You are right.
W: The Greens held a birthday party for me today. They bought me a cake, sang to me and gave me this gift.
M: What is it? Why haven't you opened it?
W: I was waiting until I got back to my room to open it.
M: But you should have opened it at once when they gave it to you.
W: Really? But in China, we never open gifts in front of other people.
M: That's interesting! Americans always open gifts immediately.
W: Oh, I hope I didn't make the Greens unhappy.
M: I'm sure they will understand. But you should send them a thank-you note. That's an American tradition too.
W: I will do that. Thank you.
W: Hi, Bill, this is Lily. I went to your home after school but you were not at home. Here is the final information about the graduation party. I have booked the restaurant from 6:30 in the evening. You need to get there at around 6:15 so that we will have time to prepare before the guests arrive at 7 o'clock.
Are you still OK to get the music ready? I think pop music will be better than country music or jazz for the party.
As for food, I know we have talked about serving hot food, but I think people will be happier to have some ice cream after dinner. Betty is bringing cakes and I'm happy to buy some drinks.
If you have any questions, please call me or Mr Black, the restaurant manager, at 6433627. Bye.
M: Today, I want to share something about customs around the world. People in different countries have their own way of life. What is polite in one country may not be in another.
For example, in Britain, you shouldn't lift your bowl to your mouth when you are having some soup. Besides, you should have the soup quietly. But in Japan, you needn't worry about making a noise when you drink something. It means you are enjoying it.
I once ate at a restaurant in Tokyo in the British way of dining, and the waiter came up and asked if everything was OK.
In short, it's interesting to learn about these differences and it's also important to remember "When in Rome, do as the Romans do".
