Text 1
W:I’m not sure whether to buy a new car or simply find a second-hand one.
M:If I were you, I would buy a new one. Repairing cars will cost you a lot.
Text 2
M:Wow, so many choices, and so many people. So, what kind of film do you want to see?
W:It’s up to you. But nothing too violent, please.
Text 3
W:How was the exam? Did every one of the 50 students pass it?
M:No, no. The exam was difficult. Only 10% got an A, and 30% failed to pass it.
Text 4
W:How much time do we have before the meeting? We don’t have to hurry, do we?
M:Don’t worry. It’s 7:30 now. We still have an hour and a half. It takes only thirty minutes to get there.
Text 5
M:So, tell me about the movie.
W:Oh, it’s one of those cowboy stories. A cowboy rides into town on his horse and rides out with a girl.
M:Sounds like quite a story.
W:Yeah, really.
Text 6
W:Got up late as usual? Or failed to catch the bus?
M:Sorry, madam. Let me explain.
W:What’s the story then? I’m listening.
M:I got up early this morning. Getting ready, I rushed to the bus stop. On my way there, I noticed a crowd of people standing around an old man. He was seriously ill. I called a taxi and took him to hospital. After the old man’s son arrived, I hurried to school. Luckily the kind taxi driver gave me a free ride.
W:What a kind-hearted boy! We are proud of you.
Text 7
M:So much rubbish and waste! I just wonder how people deal with these things every day.
W:Don’t worry. There are many ways of dealing with them. The other day, I heard that a big modern rubbish factory is being built near our town.
M:A rubbish factory? To produce rubbish or deal with rubbish?
W:To deal with rubbish, of course.
M:How much rubbish can it deal with every day?
W:Maybe 3,000 tons. I am not sure. Three months later, the trucks will take all of the rubbish out of the town.
M:Great, our town will become cleaner then.
Text 8
M:Your readers are interested in your childhood. What was it like?
W:I grew up in a small town. We had poor housing conditions but we lived in very beautiful settings, so I had my favorite trees and I had contact with birds. My parents were farm workers. Though we were poor for the most part, I think I was often happy.
M:It would not have been expected that you would become a writer. Did your mother have expectations of you?
W:Well, my mother didn’t have expectations of me in the sense of going to college when I grew up. I think her greatest contribution was simply that she loved me very much. No matter what happened, I had my mother with me.
M:She gave you confidence.
W:Oh, she did. She earned very little money. In spite of that, she managed to buy a typewriter for me. She just wanted me to be able to do things that I wanted to.
Text 9
W:You look down. Is there anything wrong?
M:I failed in the speech contest in our school.
W:Why? Was it because the topic was too difficult?
M:No. It was about public transport. I didn’t know much about the topic at first, but I’d prepared really well for it.
W:I know. You even didn’t play basketball during that period in order to prepare for it.
M:But my efforts didn’t pay off.
W:So what happened? Were you nervous?
M:Yes. I’ve never taken part in such a big contest before.
W:Don’t worry. I’m sure you’ll do well next time. So how did our classmate John do in the contest? He won a writing contest last year.
M:He failed, too.
W:Why? Was he not ready for it?
M:Actually he prepared well for it — we prepared together — but he had a terrible cold.
W:What a pity!
Text 10
M:I’m Richard Hunter. You may recognize my face from an article in a local paper. This is mainly about my so-called Boot Camp. As the name suggests, this consists of some quite difficult exercises, designed to make a man of you! That’s a joke. Most of my customers are women. I do mostly morning training in villages, and I advertise in local primary schools. I find that’s the best way of reaching the younger mothers. The training is always carried out outdoors, in all weathers. I’m very much into showing that you don’t need gym equipment or heavy weights. So I like to use real things which you can find around your house or garden.
My business is still at the developing stage, and the same goes for my website. At the moment, it’s just advertising what I do. It has also got some pages of advice about training. The long-term diet is next on my list for the website, although I haven’t started that yet. Within six months, I hope to have some videos of people showing some training methods. I’m also planning to organize some sports camps for young children in the summer holidays and I’m looking for some helpers. So if anybody is interested...
