W:Do you need me to get you anything? I’m leaving now.
M:Could you buy me a bottle of milk and some bread?
Text 2
W:I think we’ve covered everything. Would you like a cup of coffee before we move on to the next item?
M:Good idea! I’m dying for a coffee.
Text 3
W:Look! The bookstore is over there.
M:I’m sorry, but I can’t stop there. There’s no place to park.
Text 4
M:Now, please tell me exactly how this happened.
W:Well, I stopped immediately when the light turned yellow, but the car behind ran into me.
Text 5
W:Mr. Johnson, I wonder if I could possibly ask for leave tomorrow morning.
M:What happened?
W:My father is in the hospital at the moment. I want to go and look after him.
M:Oh, I’m sorry to hear that. Go ahead, and just deal with your work when you return.
Text 6
W:Okay, Mr. Taylor, let’s go ahead and begin. First of all, tell me about your last job.
M:Well, I worked for five years at Hi-Tech Computers.
W:Okay. Hi-Tech. How about your website writing skills? Oh, we are looking for someone to create and manage our company’s website.
M:Umm...uh, website, website. Huh...I don’t think I’ve read that book.
W:Huh? And what about the experience with making flash?
M:Well...I think sometimes computers flash...if that’s what you mean.
W:Okay, Mr. Taylor, I think I have all the information I need!
M:Oh, and I really like computer games. I play them every day.
W:Right, right. Thanks, Mr. Taylor. We’ll be in touch.
Text 7
M:Hello, Lisa. We’re doing a survey of our customers. How often do you come to the club?
W:Three times a week, usually.
M:Can you run 10 kilometers an hour on the running machine?
W:Oh, not that fast, maybe 8 kilometers an hour.
M:Do you use our swimming pool? You know we have a new swimming pool.
W:No, I don’t. I can’t swim. I’m actually a little nervous around water.
M:OK. You know, we offer lessons here.
W:I know, I know. But I’m really afraid of water.
M:You might try lessons, though. I’m sure our trainer can help you overcome that fear.
Text 8
W:AST Sales Department. May I help you?
M:Yes.I’d like to speak to Mr. Huang, please.
W:Oh, I’m sorry he’s not in at the moment. Can I take a message?
M:I always seem to have trouble contacting him. Well, I phoned him twice last week. Look, I think the best thing to do is to ask him to phone me. He’s got my telephone number, and it’s 37460. Tell him to phone me as soon as possible.
W:So if he comes back I shall ask him to ring you at 37460. Is that right?
M:Yes, please.
W:And could I have your name, please?
M:Mr. Ibson of Carlos Enterprises.
W:Could you spell your name, please?
M:Ibson, that’s spelt I-B-S-O-N.
Text 9
W: Hello. Care for the Community. How can I help you?
M:Oh, good morning. I’m interested in doing some part-time work for your organization. My name is Philippa Tailor. I’m a student at the University of Leicester.
W:Good morning, Philippa. When would you be available to work? Days? Evenings?
M:Well, days would be difficult, as I have classes then. I am thinking maybe a couple of evenings a week, or maybe three. But no more than that.
W:OK. Philippa, why are you interested in working for us?
M:Well, I major in Social Care Studies. I’m hoping to apply for a job in social care when I graduate, and this would give me some work experience in this field.
W:Great. And what makes you suitable for this kind of work, do you think?
M:Well, I have very good communication skills. That’s my strong point, I think. And I’m a good listener. Sometimes you can help by just listening, you know.
W:I agree. Hmm, right. What I’d like to do, if it’s OK with you, is to fix an appointment so we can meet and talk about this some more. It wouldn’t be anything formal, not an interview or anything like that. Er, how are you fixed for Tuesday 9th September at 4:30?
M:Ah, I’m sorry. I have a lesson then. Would Wednesday be possible?
W:The 10th? Yes, that would be fine.

May I have all your attention, please? We need to get this meeting started because we have a lot to do before graduation. Thank you all for electing me as your chairman and I will do my best to make sure we have a great graduation ceremony. I just need your help to get everything running smoothly.
You all have been selected by your departments to plan the graduation. You should all feel honored that your classmates thought so highly of you. Right now a sheet of paper is going around that I need all to fill out. Please write down your name, telephone number, and what part of the graduation you would like to help organize. Please keep in mind that all parts of the graduation require a great deal of time and devotion. So please only sign up for a part that you have time for. When you have signed the paper with your name, telephone number and part, please place the paper on my desk. At our next meeting on Friday, we will break up into groups and get to work on everything. Start thinking about how you want to organize your small groups before then. OK. That’s all from me. See you on Friday.
