Text 1
W:I wonder if there is a service charge for our meal.
M:I think so. The menu says the service charge is 10%.
Text 2
M:I was scared by the storm last night, which hit the area near the hotel.
W:Me too. It has been reported that lightning hit the factory near the farm.
Text 3
W:Get up quickly! It’s Sunday!
M:Don’t open the curtains! Can’t I sleep in today? We don’t need to go to school.
W:Not a chance! Don’t you remember it’s Mom’s birthday? We have a lot to do before she wakes up.
Text 4
W:Can’t we go someplace and talk? It’s so crowded here.
M:Well, there’s a little park along the street about three blocks away. It’s usually not crowded at this time of day.
Text 5
W:How was that lecture? Was it interesting as you thought it would be?
M:Most of it was fascinating. But there were a few parts of it that I couldn’t make out.
Text 6
W:You’re going to your job interview dressed like that?
M:You have a problem with my clothes?
W:The jacket and pants are fine. Gray is a good color. But the tie is terrible.
M:You don’t like the orange tie?
W:It’s too bright. Don’t you have a red or a blue tie?
M:Well, I’ll put on a red tie. Anything else?
W:No, you look great. Oh, the shoes. Take off those white shoes.
M:OK. I’ll put on my black shoes. All right?
W:Perfect. Oh, take a briefcase. It’ll make you look smarter.
Text 7
W:Hi, Peter!
M:Hi, Cindy!
W:Great to see you again! Welcome to London!
M:Thanks. It’s great to be here finally.
W:So, how are you? How was your journey?
M:Well, the flight was forty-five minutes late but after that, it was fine. Its service was very good. The in-flight movies were really cool but there wasn’t much food, so I’m kind of hungry now!
W:Oh, you poor thing! Well, it will be a long drive home, so why don’t we get some breakfast around here first? Look, there’s a restaurant over there.
Text 8
W:I thought you’d be studying for the exam and maybe I can study with you.
M:Oh, well, I was just taking a break. This math thing gives me a headache.
W:I know what you mean. I’ve been working on it for three hours already. I’m beginning to go impatient. I just don’t get some of it.
M:But I can’t believe you are coming to me. I mean you do know what I got on the last test, don’t you?
W:Yeah, I know. You told me. I just thought two heads might be better than one.
M:Yeah, that’s a nice idea. But... you know, I wish I knew the girl in our class who got a hundred on the last test. She didn’t miss a question. Umm... was it Elizabeth?
W:Oh, yeah, Elizabeth! Why don’t you give her a call?
M:Good idea! Could you tell me her phone number?
W:OK.
Text 9
M:So you are Miss Brown, right?
W:That’s right.
M:You said you are interested in a job as a waitress.
W:Yes, I saw your sign in the window asking for part-time waitresses.
M:Mm, have you worked as a waitress before?
W:Yes, I’ve worked as a waitress for three years at different restaurants.
M:I see. Are you working now?
W:Yes, at Park Hotel.
M:Why do you want to leave?
W:Because I can’t work full-time at the moment. I’m taking some courses in the university.
M:I see. When are you available?
W:I’m free all day on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
M:That suits us very well actually. We are looking for someone to help us late in the week when we get very busy. That’s Thursday afternoon, Friday evening as well as all day Saturday. The restaurant is closed on Sunday.
W:That’s fine with me.
M:When can you start?
W:Is the first day of next month all right with you?
M:That’s good. The first day of May. By the way, you’ll get $ 8 an hour, with tips, of course.

Hello, everyone, I’m Susan. I began to work on the radio at the age of 12. I used to call the radio station quite a lot, answer questions and quizzes, and all that sort of things. One of the announcers thought my voice was nice, so he wanted me to come and work for him. The first couple of days, I had no idea what was going on. There were a great number of microphones in front of my face, and I was told to make this show fun and interesting. It was a challenging job because I had to come up with clever ideas at once, but the topics were quite simple. They were mainly about music. My parents were very proud of me. At the age of 12, their daughter was a DJ. What could be better than that? I remember they would listen to my programme every single time, record it and then listen to it over and over again when they could. It was a big thing to be a radio person then being only 12. Now I’m 17 years old. Some of my friends ask me if I would be a DJ for a long time. Well, I really enjoy it, have a lot of fun and never get fed up with it. But it is a hobby. It is never something I want to do for life.
