W:Does the No. 25 bus go by the Hillside Gallery?

M:Yes, but I suggest you not take a bus or drive there. You will be stuck in a traffic jam at weekends on this street. The underground is easy and fast.

W:OK. Thank you.

Text 2

M:What can I do for you, madam?

W:I am interested in buying that clock. I have been late for work almost every day this week, since my clock was broken last week.

M:Well, luckily, this one is on sale now.

W:OK, I’ll take it.

Text 3

M:My tooth is killing me. The cold weather seems to make it worse. I’m afraid I will have to go to the dentist.

W:Yes, you must. Cold weather often makes the ache worse.

Text 4

M:Welcome home, Jane!

W:Thank you, honey.

M:Did you enjoy your flight?

W:Yes. But I was scared at first. Luckily my colleague had already traveled by plane before. He seemed very calm. He reduced my fear and I ended up having a great time.

M:How much are these shirts?

W:Sir, they are 30 dollars each. But there is a special promotion today. You can get two for only 40 dollars.

M:I’ll take two then.

Text 6

W:Thanks for stopping. Sometimes it can be impossible to get a taxi in the rain.

M:Don’t worry. Where to?

W:I’m going to Fifth Avenue and East 22nd Street. No rush at all.

M:That’s good, because it looks like we can’t move more than a few feet per minute now! The traffic is terrible.

W:Well, that’s what happens when it rains during rush hour. I’m one of the lucky ones. Today, I would be on my way to an appointment at the bank around this time, but I get to go home from work early.

M:That’s great, madam. I’ll try to get you home as early as possible.

Text 7

M:Being a model is a dream of many girls. How were you able to make your dream come true?

W:In fact, my mother put me in TV commercials and other advertisements when I was just a small baby.

M:Do you think that modeling has made a difference to your life?

W:It’s difficult to say. Sometimes I feel like it’s hard to make friends when you are a model. It seems like all they care about is my looks.

M:What is your favorite part of being a model?

W:I really like all the traveling of my work. I have been able to go to Europe and Latin America and a lot of other beautiful locations around the world. I think the best thing, though, is having people look at me and think that I’m beautiful. I love the attention.

Text 8

W:Hello, Dan, nice to see you here!

M:Nice to see you.

W:By the way, what do you like to do in your spare time?

M:I like to play sports.

W:Which sport do you play the most, volleyball, basketball, football, or baseball?

M:The last one. When I was in high school, I played it very well.

W:You’re more active than I am. I like reading, photography, and computers.

M:I don’t know much about computers. All I have is a typewriter.

W:Really? But you can’t get on the Internet with that!

M:That’s right. I use the library’s computers when I read my e-mail.

W:Well, I know what you need for your birthday!

M:That’s very kind of you.

Text 9

M:May I speak to Mr. Carrey, please?

W:I’m sorry. Mr. Carrey is not available now. He is in a very important meeting at the moment and cannot be disturbed. Would you like me to pass the message to him?

M:Well, I want to discuss with him the new project we signed last week.

W:Well, I’m afraid the meeting won’t end until one o’clock and then he has a lunch appointment. If he has time, I can ask him to ring you before he leaves.

M:OK.I’d be grateful if you would.

W:May I know your name, please?

M:Yes, this is Jake Woods.

W:Mr.Woods, could I take your telephone number and then I’ll ask Mr. Carrey to ring you as soon as he’s free?

M:Yes, it’s Hong Kong — 68261427 extension 5146.

W:Hong Kong — 68261427 extension 5146. Perhaps he has no time to ring you this morning, but I will ask him to ring you as soon as he returns from lunch.

M:Thank you.
