Text 1

M: Will you be here before lunch?

W: I'm not sure. I have to pick up my son on the way.

Text 2

W: I really appreciate it if you can lend me some money. I want to buy a gift for my mother.

M: I wish I could, but I have spent all the money on my brother's bike.

Text 3

M: I'm going downtown. Do you have anything to buy

W: Honey, we need to buy some vegetables and fruit.

Text 4

W: What are you doing?

M: I'm designing a dress. I entered a contest and the winning designer gets a trip to Paris.

W: Wow! I think you're going to do well in the contest!

Text 5

M: I'd love to go to the Super Bowl next week, but I don't think there are any more tickets.

W: Why don't you talk to Laura? She might be able to give you some advice. And I know she is planning to go herself, so maybe you could go with her.

Text 6

W: I have had a problem with the person living on the floor above me. He wakes up at 6:00 a.m. and walks around loudly. It wakes me up every morning.

M: I understand. People here are usually respectful of each other. It usually doesn't become a problem after a short conversation.

W: Well, I have spoken to this person before, and he just told me, "Too bad!"

M: Oh, that is unacceptable. I will speak to him on your behalf. Don't worry.

W: Thank you, I also still need some repairs done on the bathroom sink when you get a chance.

M: I'll send for someone to look at it right away.

Text 7

W: George, you look so angry. What happened?

M: Nothing. I'd rather you didn't ask about it.

W: Come on. It bothers me when you feel sad. Besides, you shouldn't keep your feelings inside. So, talk to me.

M: All right. This morning I took my broken camera to the shop. I just bought it for 600 dollars two days ago. They said it was my own problem. They would charge me 100 dollars if I wanted it repaired.

W: What's wrong with the new camera?

M: I'm sure it has enough power, and I didn't drop it, but it doesn't show anything on the screen.

W: No wonder you're so angry. I'd be mad, too, if someone treated me like that.

M: Yeah. And they were rude. They said I didn't know anything about cameras.

W: Maybe you should file a complaint with the Consumer Protection Agency.

M: Jenny, how is your work going?

W: Well, it's not bad. As a storyteller and media consultant for NASA, I have many opportunities to talk with the famous scientists in the country. And the pay is really good. But there is a problem.

M: What is it?

W: I often have to work on the weekend. And sometimes I have to work overtime at night. So I don't have much time of my own. I have no time for my parents and I even have no time to go on a blind date. So how is your work?

M: I face the same problem. But that's my life. I can't do much about it. You know, I have a big family to support. So I'll just keep working like that.

W: But I'm considering quitting.

M: What? I can't believe you'll give up such a great job.

W: It's true that it's a really great job in many people's eyes. I know thousands of people dream of such a job. But I should have my own life. I don't want to be a work machine. Actually I'm considering moving to a small town somewhere. I'm sure life there can be more relaxing.

M: That's true.

Text 9

M: Well, your wedding day is this weekend. Are you ready?

W: Yeah, I think so, except for one thing.

M: What's that?

W: Well, I'm supposed to wear some special things to the wedding for good luck.

M: I thought you were planning to wear a wedding dress.

W: I am, of course! But it says that to have a happy marriage, I have to wear something old, something new, something borrowed something that I borrow from another person and something blue.

M: Old, new, borrowed, and blue, huh? I've never heard that. So what are you going to wear?

W: Well, for something old, I'm wearing my grandmother's diamond ring. And my wedding dress is something new, and I'm wearing blue flowers in my hair.

M: OK, that's something old, new, and blue. You still need something borrowed.

W: Yeah, I just don't know what, though.

M: Hey! How about this? It's my lucky coin. I always wear it inside my shoe when I need good luck. You can borrow it and put it in your shoe during the wedding.

W: Oh, thanks! Now I'm ready for my wedding day.

Text 10

Hi, I'd like to talk to the manager about something. I have to travel every day from Souk Road to the airport. Only the Number 16 bus travels along this road.

Your timetable is there. It shows that there are buses from Souk Road to the airport every ten minutes. If so, why do I have to wait half an hour for a bus nearly every day?

The rules say that if there are empty seats on a bus, it will just stop at every stop where people are waiting. Why is it, therefore, that half-empty buses go straight past me when I am standing at the bus stop?

The rules say that no bus may carry more than 40 seated passengers and 20 standing passengers. Yesterday I was the first to get off the bus when I reached the airport. I counted the other passengers as they got off. There were 129 of them.

Clearly printed on the back of every bus is a sign that says "highest speed: 50 mph". The distance from Souk Road to Kai Tak International Airport is 12 miles. On Saturday morning a Number 16 bus traveled this distance in 10 minutes. At times, it must have done at least 80 or 90 mph.

It is obvious that our bus companies have no respect for the rules or consideration for the passengers. Can nothing be done about this?
