Unit 5 The power of nature
B卷·高中名师原创能力提升卷
Text 1
W: Shall I get back by train?
M: Well, Mum, the train is almost as expensive as flying and takes much longer. I've booked a flight. It lands in Glasgow at 4 o'clock. And then we'll hire a car to drive you home.
Text 2
W: Excuse me, sir. Is there a barber's near here?
M: Yes, the nearest one is at the third crossing of this road.
Text 3
M: This matches that suit I have at home, doesn't it? I don't know how to tie it, though.
W: Don't worry, I do. My dad taught me how to do it when I was little.
Text 4
M: The doctor said if I kept smoking, I would increase my chance of having a heart attack.
W: Did he suggest losing some weight, too?
Text 5
M: Have you read this book, Helen?
W: No. What is it about?
M: It's about differences between men and women. I wouldn't say it's a scientific book, but it kept me laughing all the way through.
Text 6
M: Oh, what a surprise to see you! Is there a problem?
W: Yes, I think there is. I have been trying to call you all morning but I couldn't get an answer.
M: That's strange. Let me check my phone. I hope it isn't broken.
W: There is an important meeting at work this afternoon. I wanted to let you know about it.
M: Ah, when I saw you at the door, I thought someone might be ill or have had an accident.
W: No, nothing like that. I just couldn't get you on the phone. Is it switched on?
M: I'll have a look. Now I remember — I put it in my coat pocket and my coat is in the car! No wonder I couldn't hear you calling.
Text 7
W: Your backpack seems very heavy. I'm afraid that you will have to have it checked.
M: No problem. What about this small bag?
W: You can take it with you. What kind of seat would you like, one next to the window or one in the middle?
M: I'd like to have a good view from the window during the flight.
W: OK, I'll give you such a seat in the right row. And here is your ticket, passport and boarding pass. Please get on the plane at gate 17.
M: Thank you. And what is the latest time for me to get on the plane?
W: At 8 o'clock, fifteen minutes before the plane takes off. The plane is leaving on time.
M: Thank you very much.
W: You're welcome. Have a nice trip.
Text 8
W: I'm with Frank Irvine whose exhibition here at the Studio Design Center is attracting quite a bit of attention. Frank, you're not that young to be having the first major show.
M: Yes, I was born in 1948, after all.
W: When did you start getting interested in making pots?
M: Well, as a child, I was into engines. A bit late in the days, I ever started a degree in physics. But by the time I was twenty, I realized that there might be something else I wanted to do.
W: So what did you do?
M: Well, I started traveling. I went to America first where I met my wife, Carole.
W: And her father the potter Arthur Saunders?
M: Yes. I visited them quite a lot and saw her father working. And finally I asked if I could have a go. Once I'd started, I couldn't stop!
Text 9
M: You must be pretty excited about your trip to Europe, Dorothy. When are you leaving?
W: In just two weeks, and I am excited. I've been looking forward to this training program for a long time. But there're still a few things I need to do before I go.
M: Like what?
W: Like renewing my passport, and figuring out what to do with my apartment while I'm gone.
M: You are not going to give it up, are you?
W: No way. I'll never find another apartment like it around here. But I don't like the idea of paying three months' rent for an empty apartment either. So I'm looking for someone to take it while I'm away.
M: Um... let me think. Oh, I know just a person, an old colleague of mine, Jim Thomas. He is coming here to do some research this summer from June to August.
W: Well, that's exactly when I'll be away!
M: I'll tell you what — I'll be calling Jim later this week anyway, so I'll mention it to him.
W: Well, thanks, Bill.
