Text 1

M: You must be thirsty. Would you like a bottle of Coca-Cola?

W: I would rather have a bottle of beer than Coca-Cola.

Text 2

W: All right, students. Here is the list of supplies you need. Be sure to get everything on the list. You'll need all of these notebooks, as well as pencils and paper.

M: Okay, Mrs. Kaplan. My mom is taking me to the office supply store after class today.

Text 3

W: Dad, it's Julia's birthday today.

M: Oh, is she having a party?

W: Yes. And she's invited me to spend the night at her place. Is that all right, Dad?

M: OK. Just call me when you want me to pick you up.

Text 4

W: Is this a place where I can catch the bus to the zoo?

M: Yes, you can take a T30 from here, but then you have to walk six blocks.

W: That's bad. I'm too tired. Maybe I should take a taxi.

Text 5

M: According to Professor Thompson, language slowly but constantly develops from all forms into newer ones.

W: That's my opinion, too. We can easily find new words and new expressions in English.

M: Perhaps that's why new dictionaries are published about every few years.

Text 6

W: Could you tell me what I'll be responsible for?

M: You will have to check if our guests are happy with their stay in our hotel and make sure that they have everything they need. You will also answer phones.

W: Will I have to do everything on my own?

M: You will work with Mrs. Adams.

W: I'm so happy that I won't work alone. Is it allowed to wear jeans?

M: I would prefer to see you wearing a formal dress. You need to look professional.

W: OK. Got it.

Text 7

M: Hello, Mike speaking. What can I do for you?

W: Hello. This is Ella Campbell, and I'm calling from Bright Lights Radio. Could I speak to your PR manager, please?

M: Can I ask what your call is concerning?

W: Yes, I'm calling about the new hotel your company is building near the beach in Brighton.

M: OK. The PR manager is Mr. Nash. I'm afraid Mr. Nash is not available right now. Can I take a message for you?

W: Yes, could you ask him to call me back? It's quite urgent. We want to interview him on our radio show.

M: To be honest, Ms. Campbell, the best way to get in touch with Mr. Nash is to send him an e-mail.

W: An e-mail? Is it not possible to send him a text message?

M: I'm afraid not. But he does reply to all e-mails.

Text 8

M: How often do you use the Internet?

W: I use it almost every day, but I usually only use it to check my business e-mail and contact my friends. I don't often surf the Internet.

M: I use the Internet a lot. I use it to find products at the lowest prices for my company. It can be upsetting when the connection is poor.

W: So, you're online eight hours a day.

M: Yes, I like the job, though. Sometimes, I help other people in the office if they're having trouble online.

W: How do you find the Internet as a source of information?

M: I think it's fairly useful, but there are some problems.

W: What are the problems?

M: First, a lot of information you find online is false. Second, the biggest problem is that people easily get addicted to it and buy what they don't need.

Text 9

W: Dan, what time is it?

M: It's only 3 o'clock, Julie.

W: Oh, great. We have two hours before Jane gets home.

M: Jane has been under so much stress lately. She didn't even have time to plan a birthday party!

W: Yeah. Everyone should get here in an hour. I told them all to park around the corner in the drugstore parking lot.

M: You're so smart! All the decorations are starting to look good.

W: I tried to go to the store to get candles and a special cake with a woman that pops up out of the middle, but the candle was sold out and the woman was on vacation and everyone else is too tall to fit inside.

M: That's okay. We still have music and dancing. Not to mention plenty of free drinks for everyone!

W: We'd better not party too loud though. Remember when we had that party at my house last year?

M: Sure. Your upstairs neighbors called the police and we all ended up running from your house and hiding in the bushes for three hours.

W: Yes, but it was lucky that things ended up that way. One time in college I threw a party for my friend and the building ended up on fire! Those were crazier days though, and Jane's party will be nothing like this.

Text 10

M: Hi, my name's Sam Conti and my job is making and selling chocolate. People often ask how I got into this business. Well, my parents wanted me to study medicine or economics at university, but at the time I thought law might open more doors, so that's what I did. But life doesn't always work out the way you plan it. After college, I spent one year in South America, where I fell in love with growing cocoa beans. It is not an easy job, because cocoa beans can be easily affected by weather — much more than other fruits like apples or bananas. In fact, the beans are more like grapes, so each year's crop is of a different quality. When I came home, I decided to open a small shop making and selling my own chocolate. That was hard work I can tell you, because so much can go wrong with chocolate. The hardest bit is melting it in the right way, but cooling it correctly isn't easy either. To learn the trade, I set about testing all the chocolate I could find. Another thing I like to do is write up my experiments. I keep a diary for this. It's the key to my success.
