M: Hey, Claire. What classes are you taking this semester?
W: I have met my English and writing requirements, so now I am taking literature classes. I'm hoping they'll be a bit more interesting.
Text 2
W: I'm going to the museum tomorrow afternoon. Will you go with me?
M: It doesn't open on Tuesdays. Have you forgotten about that? We can go there together the day after tomorrow.
Text 3
W: The TV has broken down again, so I have to call the repairman.
M: The one repairing it last month? I don't think so. He charged us a lot. I took a course online so maybe I can do it myself this time.
Text 4
M: This wine tastes a bit strange.
W: It was made from fruit.
M: From fruit? I thought wine should be made from rice.
W: Well, this is a special wine. I made it myself.
Text 5
W: Hello, may I speak to Doctor Lee, please?
M: Sorry, he's having a meeting. Would you like to leave him any message?
W: Yes, please. He asked me to give a lecture next week and I'd like to discuss some details with him.
M: OK. I'll tell him about it after the meeting and you can call him again later.
Text 6
W: We will have a meeting tomorrow at 10 o'clock. Is that OK?
M: Yes, that will be fine.
W: We're going to go over last quarter's sales figures. In the meeting, our manager Mr. Green will ask Frank to make some suggestions on how to improve the profit.
M: That will be interesting. Will Alan attend?
W: No, he's going to fly to Los Angeles.
Text 7
M: We should stop swimming and go back home.
W: Why? I'm having fun! And the water feels perfect.
M: There is a storm coming. It's dangerous to stay in the pool.
W: The third storm in one week! Why do we always have bad weather during our holiday?
M: Come on! The rain will start in a few minutes. Look at the sky! It's cloudy. It's almost black!
W: You're right. Let's go.
M: OK. If we leave now, we will get back in time to close the windows.
W: You left them open?
M: The cool wind was nice. We left so quickly that I forgot to close them.
W: Quick! Let's get in the car and drive back!
Text 8
M: I'm going whitewater boating this weekend, Mary. And one of my buddies, Phil — you know Phil, don't you?
W: Uh-huh.
M: Well, Phil can't go because he hurt his back while playing soccer, so there's room for one more. You want to go with us?
W: Are you kidding? I've never gone whitewater boating.
M: Aw, come on! There's a mini-course being given by The Explorers Club on Wednesday night this week. Take it and you'll be ready to go with us.
W: No way! I'll never learn enough in two hours to go on a whitewater boating trip!
M: Sure you can! The instructor is great. I know of lots of people who've done it.
W: Well, it's probably not such a good idea, but how much does it cost?
M: Well, the trip will cost you $150 with everything, including food and equipment. The course is only $20.
W: That's not too bad. I'll think about it.
Text 9
W:Hi, Albert. You know John won first place during the chess competition and we've been asked to organize a party for him.
M: Yeah, sure. It's about time we started to prepare it.
W: Exactly. And when is the best time to hold it?
M: Well, John will leave for Boston next Tuesday.
W: So what about two days before he leaves? On May 16th? That's a Sunday.
M: Sounds nice.
W: What about the place? At school or at a restaurant?
M: I think it'll be expensive if we hold it at a restaurant.John said his grandparents welcome us to their big house.
W: Great. And then we ought to be thinking about invitations. Who must we invite?
M: Well, John's chess coach.
W: And John's parents.
M: Yes. Besides, we'll invite at least five teachers and twenty students.
W: OK. By the way, what gift will you give John?
M: A book or a pen. What about you?
W: Well, I will buy a dictionary for him. I heard him say that he needed a good one.
M: Yeah. That's a good idea!
Text 10
W: On August 8th this year, I went to France.Having just returned to England yesterday on December 10th, I thought some of the best and worst of life in France.
Of course everybody loves cheese and wine in France, but what I love most of all is the French style of dining. Compared to the people in the UK, people in France have shorter working hours and longer lunch breaks. While people in the UK are rushing out to buy a quick meal at lunchtime, the French are having leisure time in cafes.
The worst thing of all about France for me is the opening hours of shops. Shops in France are only open for a few hours a day because shopkeepers often take a four-hour lunch break! How could I get my shopping done? What's more, for me, as a language learner, one of the most terrible things about France is that so many people speak English!
