W: Now, I'm with Frank Irvine.Frank, were you born in Scotland?

M: Actually no. My father was from Austria and I was born there.

W: When did you start getting interested in making pots?

M: Well, as a child I was into engines. But I think by the time I was about twenty I was already aware that there might be something else I wanted to do.

W: So, what did you do?

M: Well, I started traveling, er, at first, to find out more about my father's background,and then I went to the Middle East and on to India,where I met my wife.

W: And her father?

M: Yes. And I was visiting them quite a lot and seeing her father working. And eventually I asked him if I could have a go. And then I started using very, very high temperatures to produce some pretty unique effects.

W: And this was quite some time ago?

M: Oh, I've been playing about with this since the 1970s. I started with quite small bowls, you know, small home-used objects. Then I wanted to try to make larger designs, but still something that might find its way into a home, rather than a museum.Then in 1981 I got the idea of them being used outdoors, so they got bigger and bigger. And other people like them too.

W: They certainly do. Well, thank you very much for your coming here today, Frank.

M: You're welcome.

M: Well, as I was visiting from England, I would make a British classic for you, which is a steak pie.

W: You'll probably hate me, but I'm not a big fan of red meat.

M: Don't worry. The great thing about a pie is that you can make it with lots of things. So instead of steak, you could use chicken.

W: What if we have any vegetarians watching?

M: Then they'll starve. No, I'm just kidding. You can use different things. In fact, I cooked a pie a few weeks ago for my daughter. That was made of potatoes, cheese and some other green vegetables. It was beautiful.

W: So you have already made one just to show us what the end result will be.

M: Yeah, so let me just get it out of the oven. Perfect. So ideally it would be golden brown all over. If you leave it in too long, the edges would be burnt black.

Well, good morning, ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to the Crowne Plaza business center at Coogee Beach. I'm David Bowers, your host for the next two days, and I just want to give you some practical information.OK. Coffee, tea, and cold drinks are served all day in the cafe which is just inside the main entrance to the hotel. Lunch is served between 12:00 and 2:30 in the private dining room. This evening you are invited to join the management for drinks by the swimming pool. The General Manager usually makes a short welcome speech. I'd like to apologize for the temperature. I'm afraid it's a little warmer than usual in here because the air conditioning in the business center is being repaired. However, the work will be completed before lunchtime. Right. There are some changes to the conference program. Unfortunately, one of the main speakers has canceled her talk and so a couple of the sessions have been canceled or rescheduled. The updated program is being printed at the moment. OK now, before we go for breakfast, are there any questions?
