I find that many students have already formed pretty good study habits. Unless they have basic skill problems in areas like reading and math, they actually have the ability to take notes effectively, manage their time properly, and so on. So, what gets in the way of effective performance in the classroom? I believe that “anxiety” is the key factor. Many students believe that they are “ineffective” and sure to fail, especially when compared with their classmates. These feelings can lead to anxiety that “blocks” successful performance in the classroom — especially on tests. I have personally experienced this upset feeling and kicked myself later for making those mistakes that could be avoided when anxiety gets in the way. To overcome anxiety, I recommend the following tips. First, gain temporary control of your anxiety by practicing relaxation techniques during especially anxious times. For example, deep breathing can be helpful. Second, work on feeling better about yourself. Try replacing negative thinking with positive thoughts. Praise yourself once in a while and forgive yourself for mistakes. Third, reading books, such as David Burns' Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy, can also improve your sense of self-worth. Last but not least, spend more time with positive people and on worthwhile activities.
