M: No. My parents said it was too dangerous, and they wanted me to find a safer job. How about you? What did you dream of becoming when you were a little girl?
W: When I was a little girl, I dreamed of being a great scientist, but now, as you can see, I’m just a common office clerk.
M: So what are your dreams now?
W: Well, I really want to be a translator some day, so I’m working hard to learn English.

W: Actually there are lots of countries. For example, Brazil, Australia and China are some of the popular places nowadays.
M: Well, what can tourists do in these countries?
W: Quite a lot of activities. For example, we can watch pandas in China and sail boats in Australia.

One of Britain’s most famous modern writers is Harold Pinter. Born in 1930, Pinter wrote 29 plays for the theatre and 27 screenplays for the cinema, as well as many radio and television plays. One of his best-known plays is The Birthday Party. It was first performed in April, 1958 and was initially well received. But when opening in London after several weeks, it was a commercial and critical failure and closed after only eight public performances. However, a few days later, one of the country’s most famous reviewers wrote extremely positively about the play in a newspaper, making it one of the most famous plays ever and helping Pinter build a reputation as an influential writer.
The Birthday Party is about Stanley Webber, who lives in an English seaside town. Two strangers, Goldberg and McCann, arrive on Webber’s birthday, turning his birthday party into a disaster. In 1994, The Birthday Party was performed at the Royal Opera House. Harold Pinter presented a special anniversary performance of the play at Lyric Theatre London in 2008, exactly 50 years after its first performance at the Cambridge Arts Theatre, in Cambridge, England.
