M: I am anxious about the sound of that car engine.

M: Sorry, I’m new here! Maybe you can ask that policeman over there. I’m sure he’d know.





W: Are you worried about the test today? I’ve been studying all week for it.

M: I didn’t study very much. Science comes natural to me. I could probably do the test with my eyes closed.





M: I thought I heard someone knocking at the door.

W: Just the delivery boy with a package for our neighbor Mrs. Morgan. She and her husband are visiting their daughter in Canada, so I’ll keep it until they get back.

M: Hello, everybody. This is the Learning English program. I’m the host Gerard. Anna Matteo wrote this text for the Learning English program. George Grow was the editor. Now we’re going to learn something about different languages spoken in the United States. The Modern Language Association has put data together on the number of the most commonly spoken languages in the United States.

You might be surprised at how many different languages were reported: 300. The Modern Language Association focuses on the thirty most common languages. Of course, English is the number one language. Spanish is the second most common. Chinese is the third, and French is the fourth.

Now the Modern Language Association has put all the information together in different ways. For example, you can look up a particular language, let’s say Korean, and see how many speakers there are throughout the US. There are almost 900 thousand Korean speakers. Then, you can see how that compares to the total number of the speakers of languages other than English. The total number is 45 million, and 2 percent are Korean speakers. It’s also possible to see how many Korean speakers there are in different areas.
