W: All week I’ve heard you saying you can hardly wait for Sunday. Now it’s here.

M: Yeah, walking and fresh air will prepare us for the Monday to come.

M: What’s the schedule for today?

W: Our first class is at 8:50 am. It’s maths. It doesn’t finish until 10:35 am. Then we have a 20-minute break. After that it’s science.

W: It doesn’t look as though these plants have been watered for a long time.

M: I came around with the watering pot just two days ago. Are you sure the leaves are getting enough light?

W: Maybe that’s the answer.

W: What’s wrong, Tom?

M: Well, I’ve got a term paper due in a week, but all the books I need are lent!

W: I know what you mean. There are a million books here, but you can never find what you need.

M: Celia, I’ve got Mrs. Robinson coming in 10 minutes and I can’t find her file.

W: I put it on your desk last night before I left.

M: Those are the letters this week. I can only find the letters.

W: I put the case file as well as the notebook with the letters. Here they are.

M: The sun is so bright here by the pool! I wish I had my hat.

W: You left it at home?

M: I think so. It was in my suitcase before we went to the airport, but I must have taken it out.

W: What about your sunglasses?

M: Well, they broke on the first day. They fell onto the beach, and I sat on them by accident.

W: You’ve had some bad luck on this vacation so far, honey! Hey, let’s go to the gift shop in the hotel and buy you a new hat. I want to get a new T-shirt anyway.

W: Sir, I have a question before we call the first applicant in.

M: Go ahead!

W: Will we be done very soon? I told an agent I would meet him to discuss some business over lunch.

M: The last interview starts at 11 o’clock, so we should be done in plenty of time. I have a doctor’s appointment this afternoon anyway.

W: OK, but if it looks like that the 11 o’clock interview is going to go much more than an hour, I’ll need to step out to give the agent a call. I might just have to ask him to reschedule time.

M: What are you doing, Mera?

W: I’m closing my account in the City Bank. I’ve been fed up with their bad service.

M: Oh, banks are all the same. Mine’s no better. You’d think things would have been improved, because now they’re all computerized, but they’re not — they’re worse.

W: If you ask me, computers are just something they blame when they make a mess of things.

M: Yeah. And an excuse to cut staff, banking hours and the number of branches!

W: And they’re very slow. They chat away to each other half the time.

M: That’s what I want to say too.

W: If so, I may as well stay where I am. Your bank doesn’t sound any better.

M: Well, you could always keep your money at home.

M: So how did you start your job?

W: Once I was asked to write an article for a local paper. The paper had wanted me to write about famous people. Instead, what I did was to concentrate on people who had something original to say.

M: And how far did your family influence your job choice?

W: My father was a film producer. I should have become an actress—something my father would have loved. But in fact, the biggest influence was my school…the hours and hours spent in the library.

M: The first magazine you edited is Female Focus, and you resigned at last. Why?

W: Mainly because of disagreement with the owners. They were unwilling to change things. The magazine had been losing lots of money before I became its editor. When I took over, it was still losing money but nothing as much as before.

M: Now you are editing Woman’s World. How do you make it the best-selling women’s magazine ever?

W: For some of my competitors, the most important point is the cover of your magazine. But the real challenge is how you encourage readers to read a serious piece. You have to get their attention. And nothing does that better than a very lively, even shocking opening line.

Hello, everyone. Welcome to the Maritime Museum. I’d like to give you some instructions first. The restroom is on the first floor, and the public rest area on the second. The Education Center is on the top floor and there’s a good little library in it which you might like to use. Now if you look out of this window, you should be able to see where the museum’s ships are placed. You can go on a tour of the old ship there. But I don’t recommend it to the old because there are a lot of stairs to climb. OK, let’s take a walk around the museum now. The first room we’re coming to is the theatre. There’s a continuous video showing today about the voyages of Captain Cook. Now we’re moving along the Leisure Gallery. Here we try to give you an idea of the many different ways in which Australians have enjoyed their time by the sea. At the end of this section we’ll come to the Picture Gallery where we’ve got a large number of collections of paintings all by Australian artists.
