W: I graduated from college just about a month ago. I came here to find work just about a week ago.
M: So have you found work here?
W: Yes. I’ll start teaching German in a language school next Monday. I spent years in Germany and can speak the language very well.
M: You know, I’ve been thinking about learning German. Maybe I should go to your class.

M: Now the Bronx High School of Science I’m studying in is so famous in New York. I like it very much.
W: What are your favorite subjects?

W: Good. You guys help each other.
M: Richard tells me you’re a doctor.
W: Yes. I am working in a medical center in New York. And what does your mother do?
M: She’s a lawyer, in Liverpool.

Text 10
M: The British favorites include fried boneless fish and deep-fried chips. They cover the fish with a mixture of eggs, flour and milk. The chips are thick slices of potatoes. It’s usual to shake vinegar and salt over the food to bring out the full taste. In fact, the root of fish and chips is not as British as you might think. The story of the chips goes back to the 17th century to either Belgium or France, depending on who you believe. Strangely enough, the chips may have been invented as a substitute for fish, rather than just a kind of vegetable. When the rivers froze over and nothing could be caught, clever housewives began cutting potatoes into fishy shapes and frying them as an alternative. Around the same time, fried fish was introduced into Britain by Jewish people from Portugal and Spain. During the World War II, the British government tried their best to make sure fish and chips could be purchased every day.
