Ladies and gentlemen, I’m pleased to announce the winner of the song-writing competition this year. As you probably know, every year, young songwriters from our town enter our summer competition held here in the beautiful Brook Theater. When local musician Fred McGill started the event four years ago, we had no idea how much it would grow. Last year, over 100 people sent in their songs. This year the number of people who participated doubled. It’s wonderful to see the talent and energy of the next generation. Our judges were amazed by the musical skills they saw and heard. Congratulations to all the teenagers who sent in their songs. It was a difficult choice, but our committee has made a selection. Let’s clap our hands for singer-songwriter Maryanne James! Maryanne, where are you? Please join me on stage! There she is! Maryanne, we loved the way you sang about everything from the colors of your garden to the eyes of children. Please accept this prize. We hope it encourages you to continue writing songs when you start music school in the fall. Finally, we’d like to ask you to perform a song for our audience.
