M: We're moving very slowly now. I'm going to miss my meeting if we don't speed up soon.
W: Yes, we seem to be late again.
Text 2
M: I have those reports all ready for you, Mrs. Dalloway. But I didn't have time to print them out on my way to the office.
W: No problem, Mr. Paddock. Why don't you just email them to me now? I'll have my secretary Miss Andrews print them out.
Text 3
M: I heard there is a big plan to improve the district.
W: Yes. There is a big sports center under construction, and the swimming pool is open ahead of schedule. And the only cinema is now in the process of being changed into a film museum.
Text 4
M: Hi Jane. I know you're probably busy, but I just want to call you to thank you for helping me cook for my brother's birthday dinner. Everybody loved the food.
W: You're welcome. It was my pleasure.
Text 5
W: When I am playing the piano, I don't worry about anything. How about you? Do you do anything special to relax?
M: I go to the gym every day. It helps me deal with stress.

W: I have been looking at this web page for over an hour and I still haven't finished getting all the kitchen appliances that we need!
M: What are you getting?
W: Well, the first thing on my list is a new coffee maker. I also want to get a new juicer.
M: Don't forget to get a new mixer. I lent the old one to my brother and he broke it.
W: Yeah, I know. I'm actually thinking of completely refurnishing the kitchen and getting a new oven, dishwasher, fridge and rice cooker.
M: The kitchen will look amazing!

M: I haven't seen you for a long time. Where have you been?
W: I went to New York to visit my sister and stayed there for two months. Actually, I really went to meet my new nephew.
M: That's great! How old is he?
W: Well, he was five months old when I got there, and he could possibly be the most beautiful baby I have ever seen.
M: What did you do in your sister's home?
W: I helped take care of the baby and played with him a lot, which was nice. But what I enjoyed most was feeding him.

M: Hello.
W: Hello, Roger? This is Ann.
M: Oh hi, Ann. How have you been? And how's your new apartment working out?
W: Well, that's what I'm calling about. You see, I've decided to look for a new place.
M: Oh, what's the problem with your place now? It's in the city center with a park nearby. I thought you liked the apartment.
W: Oh, I do, but it's too far from the school. Do you think you could help? I think you might know more about the housing situation near the school.
M: Okay, how much do you want to spend on rent?
W: Uh, somewhere around$200 a month.
M: Hmm. And anything else?
W: Yeah, I need a parking space.
M: Well, I know there's an apartment building around the corner near my place. I'll drop by on my way to class today.
W: Hey, thanks a lot.
M: No problem.

M: We all know that exercise is good for us. But sometimes it seems too hard to leave the sofa.
W: I can see that. You seldom do exercise.
M: Plus, having the doctor tell us to get two and a half hours of exercise a week doesn't really help our motivation much.
W: Don't be discouraged. Now, a new study suggests getting benefits from exercise doesn't have to be that demanding. Jacob Sattelmair, from Harvard University, has done a study into how much exercise is needed to lower the risk of heart attacks.
M: Hmm…interesting.
W: The study showed that people who put in 300 minutes' exercise a week had a 20% lower risk of death due to heart disease. Still, the people who exercise 150 minutes a week did pretty well too, lowering their death risk by 14%.
M: And what about the people who exercise 60 minutes as much as what I probably do? Does that help?
W: Of course.

W: Last month I got the chance to take part in an underwater research project in an area of the Gulf of Mexico, which is a long way from shore. A team of researchers were trying to learn more about the fish and other creatures that live in this part of the sea. And we spent three days on a boat. The team used a piece of underwater equipment to measure water depth and temperature. The equipment also had a camera that sent images back to the boat. It was controlled by a computer on the boat, and I was allowed to operate it a few times.
However, the thing I enjoyed most was diving into the water. At first, I was quite scared — mainly because I couldn't see land in any direction. But as soon as I jumped into the water, I wasn't afraid any longer. It was amazing to see the colorful fish swimming around. Everyone in the team was friendly. The experience was like having a holiday and it will help me work harder to become a scientist.

W: It's so hot without wind. Look at those clouds! I can't believe I forgot my umbrella again!
M: Yeah. But we are almost there, Mary. I think we'll make it.
Text 2
W: Excuse me, I'm waiting for the ten o'clock train. Is it leaving on time?
M: It is running thirty minutes late due to strong winds which blew a tree onto the line at three o'clock this morning.
Text 3
M: Do you still work for Microsoft, Lisa? Or did you go back to your job at the hospital?
W: No. I started my own company. I sell homemade soaps online. I've been doing that for about a year, and I love it.
Text 4
W: If you buy this model today, there's a special where you'll get a second one for free.
M: It seems a bit expensive for me.
W: Well, I think it's worth it.
Text 5
M: Want to go to lunch today? That new restaurant across from the office is supposed to be good.
W: I can't. I brought my own lunch today because the boss told me to finish some writing. I need to stay in the office.
M: All right. Maybe next time.
Text 6
W: Tomorrow is Saturday. Should we go shopping in the afternoon?
M: Hmm...Why not go shopping on Sunday? I'd like to relax at home after a week's work.
W: All right. Let's go shopping on Sunday morning.
M: What do you want to buy?
W: I need a dress for that wedding I'm going to attend.
M: I should go shopping, too. I need a backpack for a bicycle trip my friends are planning.
W: Great! If you help me choose a dress that looks good, I'll help you find a backpack. See you on Sunday!

M: Hello, Mr. Ward speaking.
W: Hello, my name is Mary Brown. I'd like to take your course on American geography.
M: I'm sorry. There're already so many students in my class.
W: I know, but I'm a student from another school, and I'll be here for only half a year. We don't have this course in our school, and I think it will be interesting.
M: I see. But it might be difficult for you. It's for science students only.
W: I think I can manage it, though I'm not a science student.
M: OK, I'll consider that.

W: This looks interesting — this assistant researcher for a TV company.
M: I know, but what makes me worried is the experience. They want two years, but I've only worked part-time for a year, really.
W: Anyway, you meet the other requirements. You're good under pressure and with deadlines — you always hand your essays in on time at college!
M: OK, if that's what you think. Do you mind having a look at my application letter today?
W: Of course not. Print it out and I'll have a look at it.
M: The closing date for applications is in a couple of days.
W: OK, I'll do it this afternoon.
M: Thank you. Then I can send the letter of application off tonight. Hey, they might ask me to go for an interview this week!

W: Can I help you?
M: Yes, my son and daughter bought this pen for my wife's birthday, but it doesn't work. I would like to exchange it for a new one.
W: Let me see. Was it dropped?
M: No, but you can see that the point is a little bit bent.
W: Yes, it is. We'd be happy to exchange it for you, but I'm afraid we don't have any more purple ones. We only have this pen in black or yellow now.
M: My wife doesn't really like either of the colors.
W: We have one with a red leather cover. That's three dollars more.
M: The children worked hard to save the 20 dollars for this one. They would probably be upset if I paid for their present.
W: If you want, we can order another pen just like this one.
M: Could you? That would be great! Thanks so much.
W: We'd be happy to. It will take a week to 10 days. We'll call you when it comes in.

W: I have developed a habit of collecting rubbish such as old toys, used things, broken furniture. What other people see as garbage, I see as potential art. Of course, it's not art in the state I find it. The process I go through from the raw materials to a finished piece is not complex at all. First, I take the collected rubbish to my studio and play around with different combinations to see if I can find some inspiration. I do this for a few days or a week before I have an idea about what I want to create. The pieces I create are mostly animal sculptures. A few times a year I get invited to display my favorite animal sculptures at exhibitions. I also create more practical and usable art. Some examples include vases made from glass bottles, lamps made from irons or blow dryers, and pencil boxes made from plastic containers. I take these items to the local market and sell them.
