W: Look at this Monet painting! It is my favorite piece. The gently flowing river, the water lilies, the bridge... It looks like such a secret and magical garden.
M: I agree.
W: What’s your favorite painting?
M: It’s not in this museum. It’s in a museum in China. I studied some of Lang Shining’s works in my art history class during college. He was a court painter for over 50 years during the Qing dynasty. Among the top 10 masterpieces of traditional Chinese paintings, there’s a painting called One Hundred Horses. It was painted by him. Can you believe it, though — he was an Italian!
W: Wow, it is amazing.

W: Jason, it is said that you were on the design team at Fashion Central.
M: Yes, for about four years. I studied design at college but didn’t get any first-hand experience until I worked for Fashion Central.
W: I see. And are you good at processing photos?
M: Well. I know how to use Photoshop.
W: What about computer programming?
M: That’s no problem. I actually studied it before I got into design.
W: There’s travel involved in this job. Any problems flying to France once a month?
M: No, that’s fine. I’m willing to do whatever it takes to be good at this job. I can work at weekends.

W: Good morning, sir. Can I help you?
M: I’d like to check out. My name is Pitt Green. I stayed in Room 126.
W: Just a moment, please. Sorry to have kept you waiting. Here’s your bill. The total is 1,100 yuan.
M: 1,100 yuan! Is there a mistake?
W: Please check the bill carefully and see if there’s any mistake.
M: Of course. I’ll check it. The room is 150 yuan per day. I stayed for 4 days. The car is rented by the day. The charge is 200 yuan per day. I used it for 2 days. I just drove to the shopping mall and the beach.
W: In any case, you’re expected to pay for extra hours and miles. I understand that you rented the car by the day, but last night you went to a concert, which means an extra charge of 100 yuan.
M: Your car charge is too high!

W: Hi, Tom.I am wondering if you could spare me some minutes.
M: Sure.What is it?
W: I remember you told me that developing a taste for classical music could improve one’s intelligence at least for a short while.Could you tell me more about it?
M: Yes. The conclusion was drawn after studying the IQs of 100 senior high students before and after they listened to a variety of online music.
W: I remember you mentioned Beethoven or...
M: Yes. It is quite interesting that those who had listened to a Beethoven piece had a higher IQ than those who had not.
W: That’s really interesting. Does that indicate that Beethoven had a higher IQ than other people?
M: I doubt it. That’s beyond the range of my research.
W: How did you carry out the test?
M: I had 50 students listen to a piece of Beethoven’s. Then I had the other 50 students listen to other music.
W: What was the performance of the first 50 students?
M: The IQ improvements were so obvious that I could not even believe the results.
W: How long did the effect last?
M: I am not sure, but it was less than 20 minutes.

Text 10
M:For more than six million American children, coming home after school means coming to an empty house. Some deal with the situation by watching TV. Some may hang out. But all of them have something in common. They spend part of each day alone. They are called "latchkey children". They’re children who look after themselves while their parents are working. And their condition has become a subject of concern. A headmaster of an elementary school said that there was a school rule against wearing jewelry. However, a lot of kids had chains around their necks with keys attached. He was constantly telling them to put them inside shirts. But there were so many keys. Slowly, he learned they were house keys. He began talking to the children who had them. Then he learned about the impact working couples and single parents were having on their children. Fear is the biggest problem faced by children at home alone. Many have nightmares and are worried about their own safety. The most common way latchkey children deal with the problem is by hiding. It might be in a bathroom, under a bed or in a closet. Another way is TV. They often play videos at high volume. Most parents don’t realize the effect on their children when they leave their children alone.
