Text 1

M: We're moving very slowly now. I'm going to miss my meeting if we don't speed up soon.

W: Yes, we seem to be late again.

Text 2

M: I have those reports all ready for you, Mrs. Dalloway. But I didn't have time to print them out on my way to the office.

W: No problem, Mr. Paddock. Why don't you just email them to me now? I'll have my secretary Miss Andrews print them out.

Text 3

M: I heard there is a big plan to improve the district.

W: Yes. There is a big sports center under construction, and the swimming pool is open, ahead of schedule. And the only cinema is now in the process of being changed into a film museum.

Text 4

M: Hi Jane. I know you're probably busy, but I just wanted to call you to thank you for helping me cook for my brother's birthday dinner. Everybody loved the food.

W: You're welcome. It was my pleasure.

Text 5

W: When I am playing the piano, I don't worry about anything. How about you? Do you do anything special to relax?

M: I go to the gym every day. It helps me deal with stress.

Text 6

W: I have been looking at this web page for over an hour and I still haven't finished getting all the kitchen appliances that we need!

M: What are you getting?

W: Well, the first thing on my list is a new coffee maker. I also want to get a new juicer.

M: Don't forget to get a new mixer. I lent the old one to my brother and he broke it.

W: Yeah, I know. I'm actually thinking of completely refurnishing the kitchen and getting a new oven, dishwasher, fridge and rice cooker.

M: The kitchen will look amazing!

Text 7

M: I haven't seen you for a long time. Where have you been?

W: I went to New York to visit my sister and stayed there for two months.Actually, I really went to meet my new nephew.

M: That's great! How old is he?

W: Well. He was five months old when I got there, and he could possibly be the most beautiful baby I have ever seen.

M: What did you do in your sister's home?

W: I helped take care of the baby and played with him a lot, which was nice. But what I enjoyed most was feeding him.

Text 8

M: Hello.

W: Hello, Roger? This is Ann.

M: Oh hi, Ann. How have you been? And how's your new apartment working out?

W: Well, that's what I'm calling about. You see, I've decided to look for a new place.

M: Oh, what's the problem with your place now? It's in the city centre with a park nearby. I thought you liked the apartment.

W: Oh, I do, but it's too far from school. Do you think you could help? I think you might know more about the housing situation near the school.

M: Okay, how much do you want to spend on rent?

W: Uh, somewhere around $ 200 a month.

M: Hmm. And anything else?

W: Yeah, I need a parking space.

M: Well, I know there's an apartment building around the corner near my place. I'll drop by there on my way to class today.

W: Hey, thanks a lot.

M: No problem.

M: We all know that exercise is good for us. But sometimes it seems too hard to leave the sofa.

W: I can see that. You seldom do exercise.

M: Plus, having the doctor tell us to get two and a half hours of exercise a week doesn't really help our motivation much.

W:Don't be discouraged. Now, a new study suggests getting benefits from exercise doesn't have to be that demanding. Jacob Sattelmair, from Harvard University, has done a study into how much exercise is needed to lower the risk of heart attacks.

M:Hmm...interesting.

W: The study showed that people who put in 300 minutes' exercise a week had a 20% lower risk of death due to heart disease. Still, the people who exercise 150 minutes a week did pretty well too, lowering their death risk by 14%.

M: And what about the people who exercise half as much as what I probably do? Does that help?

W: Of course. Even 15 minutes would help.

Text 10

W: Last month I got the chance to take part in an underwater research project in an area of the Gulf of Mexico, which is a long way from shore. A team of researchers were trying to learn more about the fish and other creatures that live in this part of the sea. And we spent three days on a boat. The team used a piece of underwater equipment to measure water depth and temperature. The equipment also had a camera that sent images back to the boat. It was controlled by a computer on the boat, and I was allowed to operate it a few times.

However, the thing I enjoyed most was diving into the water. At first, I was quite scared — mainly because I couldn't see land in any direction. But as soon as I jumped into the water, I wasn't afraid any longer. It was amazing to see the colorful fish swimming around. Everyone in the team was friendly. The experience was like having a holiday and it will help me work harder to become a scientist.
