Unit 4A

Text 1

W: Are you ready to order, sir?

M: Yes. I'd like to have an apple juice and a chicken sandwich.

Text 2

W: It never occurred to me that you would bother to send me a postcard from Moscow during your business trip. Thank you.

M: I posted it on my second day in Moscow. And I hope you'll like it.

Text 3

W: I hear you went to London at the weekend, Tony. Did you see all the sights?

M: A few, although the main purpose was to cheer my aunt up. She's in hospital with a broken leg.

Text 4

W: I can't believe you got second place in the race! That was amazing, Ken.

M: Thanks, Rita. But I really wanted to be the champion this year. Ron is just too fast; he always beats me.

W: At least you beat Mark this year.

Text 5

W: I often mistake Evan for Tom in class. Can you tell them apart, Mr. Holland?

M: No. They are twins, and many teachers make the same mistake like us.

W: It is really a little embarrassing to make mistakes all the time facing so many students.

Text 6

W: Hello, is that the front desk? This is Room 504.

M: Yes. How can I help you?

W: I want to take a shower, but there is no hot water.

M: Oh, I'm so sorry. You turned the tap all the way to the right?

W: Yes, I've been trying to get hot water for 10 minutes. It's still freezing cold.

M: Well, a lot of people take showers before breakfast. Maybe if you wait for a while, it will heat up again.

W: Wait? I have three meetings this morning. So I have to take a shower and dry my hair right now.

M: OK. I will send someone up right away.

Text 7

M: Wendy, did you see where I put the tickets? I can't find them.

W: Are you talking about the concert tickets Dad gave us?

M: No, the tickets my friend Mike gave me yesterday afternoon.

W: Oh, now I remember. The two tickets to Peking Opera. So what story will we watch tonight?

M: A story named The Drunken Beauty. It is about Yang Yuhuan. The Emperor had planned to meet her for a drink. But she didn't see the Emperor and drank alone. There will be a lot of singing.

W:I have watched it on the Internet. It is interesting. I can't wait to watch it again.

M: It's 6:00 now. It will begin in just one hour. Let's find the tickets quickly.

Text 8

W: Good afternoon. Are you looking for a particular book?

M: I don't really know what to read next. Is there anything you recommend?

W: Tell me what subjects you're interested in.

M: Oh, many different ones.

W: Well, which book did you just return?

M: It was The Story of America.

W: So, you must be interested in history.

M: A little. I was mainly reading that book to find out more about my grandfather's family.

W: I see. And what do you usually read for fun?

M: Comic books. But now I want to read more serious literature, like War and Peace.

W: That's a long and heavy book. I'm going to recommend something a little easier to start with. How about Charles Dickens' Great Expectations? It's fiction with some history included.

M: OK! I'll take this one.

Text 9

W: Hey, Diego. I'm looking for a gym. I heard you joined a gym. How is it?

M: It's really good. It has everything I really need.

W: So what does it have?

M: Well, it has a weight room and you can do weightlifting there. It also has a pool and I like swimming best.

W: Do they have any classes?

M: Well, they have dancing classes, and I've taken dancing three or four times.

W: And how much does it all cost?

M: Well, I'm paying the monthly fee so it's like forty dollars a month but I think you can get a discount if you pay with your credit card.

W: Do they take checks?

M: I'm afraid not. But you can pay cash every month. That's what I'm doing.

W: Alright. When are you going next?

M: I'm going actually. My appointment is at 5 p.m. today.

W: I'll come with you.

M: OK. Make sure you bring your sports shoes.

Text 10

M: Hello! I'm Harvard Smith. As the editor of The Voice, I'd like to introduce you to our school daily newspaper. We need volunteers to help us with our newspaper. Experience isn't absolutely necessary. But we need people with writing and typing skills. Since The Voice comes out five days a week, we need excellent students who know how to plan their time well. Good grades are necessary. We can pay you, depending on your work. But don't expect to get rich. This isn't something you do for the money. Mostly it's just for fun. Anyone who is interested in this job should speak to me immediately after this meeting. Be prepared to start right now. The first issue will come out tomorrow.
