W: Then, have you finished it?

M: Not yet. I've finished three fourths of it, and I'm sure I can finish it before the deadline.

W: Great.

M: So are you busy recently, Marsha?

W: Not much. Actually I'm preparing for a tour of Canada. I want to visit my cousin studying for her master's degree there.

W: Hello, Dr. Ellis, my name's Panni Holmes. My roommate Linda Johnson wanted me to call you.

M: Linda Johnson? Oh, she's in my English Poetry class. Has anything happened to her? Does she get sick?

W: No, it's just that she submitted a job application yesterday and the company asked her to go for an interview today. She's afraid she won't be able to attend your class this afternoon. So I'm calling to see whether it would be OK if I give you her paper. Linda said it's due today.

M: Certainly, that would be fine.

W: Would it be all right to come by your office around 4:00?

M: Uh, sorry, I'll be in a meeting from 3:00 to 6:00. How about leaving it with my assistant or putting it in my mailbox?

W: Fine. And Dr. Ellis, one more thing, could you tell me where your office is?

M: Well, I'm in Room 302 of the Gregory Building. I'll get it when I return.

W: I sure appreciate it. Goodbye, Dr. Ellis.

M: Goodbye.

M: Good evening, everyone. For today's People Around, we have Maria, a representative of our excellent graduates. Welcome to the night show, Maria.

W: Thank you. It's a great honor to be here.

M: So, Maria, could you tell us about your plans for the future?

W: Well, I'm considering taking a gap year after I graduate. You know, maybe travel around the world.

M: Why do you want to do that?

W: I think it will give me a chance to visit different places and experience various cultures at first hand, which will make me stronger in the face of changes and more optimistic.

M: Can you explain it further?

W: Well, the way I see it, to be successful in one's life, it is important to be able to accept changes.

M: What do you mean?

W: I mean that you should be ready to change your attitudes, and even habits to adapt to the ever changing environment. And if you've spent some time traveling, it means you have to get used to different ideas and ways of doing things, as well as food and climate.

M: Well, it sounds sensible and fair. It seems you are using a sound way to develop your adaptability.

W: I also believe traveling will teach me to be independent. When traveling you can't always get help from your family, so you have to depend on yourself, or even turn to strange people.

M: Oh, I see. You're right, Maria.

M: The history of plastic is no longer than you might expect. In fact, the first man-made plastic was made over a hundred years ago. It was invented by an English chemist in 1856, but it was an American who first produced it in quantity.

Everybody was excited by this new material because it could be made into different shapes and was so cheap to buy. Poor workers working in cities with lots of smoke and dirt could buy plastic collars. These plastic collars were hard and uncomfortable, but they did not have to be sent to wash. The poor workers could clean them every evening with just soap and water. Poor mothers unable to buy toys for their children could now afford inexpensive plastic ones. Unlike poor people's preference for plastics, rich people disliked them because they were only available in dark colors.

However, plastic has one serious fault. Plastic takes a very long time to break down, so it causes serious pollution. What's worse, some kinds of plastics can catch fire very easily, and when they do, a poisonous gas will be produced.
