Text 1

W: Lucy's cake was too sweet.

M: But didn't you have a second piece? I thought you did.

W: Yes, I did. I was being polite.

Text 2

W: I'm moving to Atlanta. I want a fresh start.

M: What? I thought you would stick it out here. I'll be very upset if you really leave.

W: Don't try to talk me out of it. I've made up my mind.

Text 3

M: I tried to keep myself organized by using sticky notes, but it failed.

W: I was in the same boat as you before. I tried different things, like setting many alarm clocks to remind myself what to do.

M: Did they work?

W: No, but dividing tasks into smaller parts is a productive way for me.

Text 4

W: I believe Juno can take full charge of the project.

M: I still recommend Carson. He is helpful and outgoing. Juno always keeps a poker face. She seems a little difficult.

W: Well, she doesn't get nervous or excited easily. Calmness is very important in business.

Text 5

W: Excuse me, sir, but I think you are in my seat, 14A?

M: Let me take a look at my ticket...hmm...my ticket says 14A as well.

W: Well, this is train car five. Are you sure you're in the right car?

M: Oh, pardon me! I'm 14A in car six.

Text 6

M: Hi June. Have you had any trouble using the system this morning? I can't use my computer.

W: There was a power failure last night. And all of our passwords were lost. You have to go to the computer services office to set up a new one.

M: Oh, great. That's the office on the first floor, next to the reception desk, right?

W: It's on the first floor but it's beside the stairs at the back. You'll have to turn left when you come out of the lift.

Text 7

W: Hi, Tom. What are you doing after school today? I thought maybe we can hang out together before I go back home.

M: I can't. I usually work out for a couple of hours in the afternoon. I need to get running right after class before it gets too dark outside.

W: A couple of hours? What drives you to push yourself so hard?

M: I am training for a marathon. My mom has run two marathons, and she has written a training schedule for me. I have to keep working hard until I'm strong enough to run a marathon.

W: How long is a marathon, anyway?

M: It's about 26 miles.

W: Wow, that's really demanding! Good luck to you.

Text 8

M: Good morning, Mary. I'm the manager John. Welcome to our city's community farm. Is today your first day?

W: Hello, thanks. I came here the day before yesterday.

M: That explains it. I was away for five days. We love having new volunteers on our farm. How did you know about us?

W: Sam told me and you know him.

M: Oh yes, Sam and other market workers come to buy our vegetables every week.

W: That's him. By the way, what's the plan for today?

M: A group of students are coming for a study trip. You'll help me teach them how to pick plants.

W: Lovely. Will they learn how to cook?

M: That's for tomorrow.

Text 9

M: You don't seem to like the paintings in this room.

W: Perhaps I am a little narrow-minded. I really can't keep pace with so many changes nowadays, so I just can't imagine that modern artists are really serious.

M: I won't argue with you, but I think you're being unfair. A modern artist is different from a traditional artist in his work.

W: Are you trying to tell me these strange paintings mean anything? Even a child could paint better than them!

M: I guess there's no point in discussing the matter any further. You have your opinion and I have mine.

W: Right. Everything has two sides. Let's go to enjoy paintings in other rooms.

M: All right. But just like other artists, modern artists also try to get across their personal feelings about the world through paintings.

W: Yes, I should enjoy their artworks more often so I can understand them better.

Text 10

W: Hey, friends! I've missed you. Let me tell you about my journey to Mexico this summer. It was the first time that I had left the United States and traveled to a foreign country. I learned useful traveling tips and had an exciting time in a different culture. The first and most important lesson I had was to make sure to apply for a passport months earlier. I got mine right before I was scheduled to leave, because I waited until the last minute! Besides, if you are flying, be sure to book a plane ticket far ahead of time so you can get a fair price. In addition, my another travel tip is to be sure you pack lightly. You will be taking that luggage with you everywhere, and it gets heavy quickly! Last but not least, I had some great times exploring the local culture. I was trying all the new kinds of food and went to special cultural events, like special dance performances and street festivals. If you follow these tips, I think you'll have an easy and rewarding experience!
