Text 1

W: Hi, Donald. Eric told me you will recover soon. Do you have everything you need in the hospital?

M: Thanks, Ashley. It would be nice to have a good radio to listen to.

W: Consider it done.

Text 2

M: All our basketball classes start during the same week at school.

W: Oh good. Now I need to buy the right shoes.

M: You do. Shall I show you where we play?

W: Yes.I'd like to see that.

Text 3

M: We need to buy something for Mary's new baby. We can go to the baby shops after work today.

W: I can't today. I have an appointment with the dentist. How about tomorrow?

M: Fine, let's make it Saturday.

Text 4

W: Mr. Black, could I have a meeting with a student here?

M: Sorry, not here, Miss Hopkins. We need a quiet environment to prepare for tomorrow's lecture.

Text 5

M: I'm reading an amazing book. I got it from the library. It's a real page-turner.

W: What book? I'm looking for something new to read. I've just finished my latest book.

M: The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. You'll love it.

Text 6

M: Pam, look at the supermarket on that hill near the park. Can you imagine if I forget to buy something there, I have to run all the way up and down again? That's crazy!

W: Well, it's hard. But if you do it daily, you would be slim and fit.

M: I know. Actually, I signed up for a tennis course in the gym near my home yesterday.

W: When do you begin?

M: Tomorrow morning. I've got an appointment with the coach. He is going to help me fix my weight problem.

W: So, how many pounds do you plan to lose in the first month?

M: Not sure yet. I will also follow the diet he has suggested.

W: Oh, no chicken wings from fast-food restaurants?

M: Nope. From now on, I will say goodbye to high-calorie foods.

Text 7

W: Welcome to our programme, Doctor Peterson. Let's see what questions we've got for you today. Here is one: can cats see colors?

M: Sort of. In the wild, many cats hunt at night because their eyes are designed for low light. Your cat can't see bright colors such as red and green, but it picks up more shades of blue, yellow and gray than humans do.

W: And why do cats give dead birds to their owners?

M: When your cat drops a dead bird at your feet, it isn't bringing you a present. Most cats just drag food home because it's a safe place to eat. A cat's mom also brings things to its children to help them practise hunting. So a female cat without children may bring these treats to its owner instead. You may not like them, but at least you don't have to write it a thank-you note.

Text 8

M: Oh no. What happened? Alexa? Why are there some dead plants?

W: I know every plant comes in alive and ends up dead. I definitely do not have a green thumb.

M: People always say that, but it's not that hard to keep house plants. What did you do to care for this one?

W: This one had a big flower on it, so I put it in the sunlight.

M: This is a winter plant from north China. It doesn't do well in direct sunlight. Just move it here. Didn't you look up how to care for it when you got it?

W: No, I just thought it was pretty and it was doing OK in the shop.

M: And this one here is all yellow, which means you gave it too much water.

W: Too much water? I think if it doesn't need the water, it won't take in it.

M: That's not how plants work. I'm afraid the root system of this one is destroyed. You'll have to throw this one away. Look, here's an app with plant information that you can always turn to.

Text 9

W: Where are you from, Corey?

M: I'm from Canada. I've just moved here.

W: Canada! Are you good at winter sports then?

M: Yeah, I love winter sports very much, such as skiing and snowboarding. I also like ice diving. What do you do in your free time?

W: Well, swimming used to be my favorite hobby. But now I spend most of my spare time in the drama club I joined last year and I really love the theater — I really want to be an actress one day. Have you got any other hobbies?

M: Um, I guess I enjoy playing online computer games. I feel quite relaxed when playing the games and it helps me make new friends. How about you? Do you spend much time online?

W: Well, I'm not interested in computer games. I think it makes no sense to spend time playing something with strangers. I prefer chatting face to face with my friends.

M: I like chatting with friends too.

W: Oh, it's time for class. Our English teacher is coming. After class I'll introduce you to some of my friends.

Text 10

M: I've lived on an island off the west coast of Scotland. I love it here but a trip to the cinema means a 55-minute boat journey plus a half-hour drive to the nearest town. That's why we all get so excited about the Screen Machine.

It's a mobile cinema that travels around the Scottish islands, visiting different areas in turn every few weeks. And sometimes we get to see the latest movies. You can't miss the huge bright blue Screen Machine when it comes into the car park. It takes an hour to change it into a comfortable, air-conditioned cinema with eighty seats. It's amazing. I really admire the Screen Machine's driver. Of course he screens the film. And there is always another person selling tickets. They need a repairman too. The salt in the sea air isn't good for the truck engines and they can break down. Ticket prices are inexpensive, so as you can imagine, as soon as the Screen Machine arrives, the phone with which the person sells tickets starts ringing. We can now also book in advance on the Screen Machine website, which makes it even more convenient. And that's the way most people choose now. It's an amazing service and much better than the long journey across the sea to the cinema.
