W:Good morning, welcome to the Language Center of our university. We aim at helping people improve their language ability in several languages. Now let's focus on one of our programs — the English training program. The program offers year-round English courses in eight levels from beginning to a high level. It offers a wide variety of courses for students, scholars, and professionals. The strength of the program is that it can offer courses that are specially designed to meet any student's specific needs and goals. On the first day of the program, you'll take a test to determine your level. At the end of each seven-week session, your language skills will be evaluated. And if you've made enough progress, you will be promoted to the next level. In addition, you can enter the bonus project of the Language Center which will allow you to have extra English hours with a native speaker. For more practice chances, there are also several social activities and field trips organized by the Students Center.

W:Welcome aboard our city tour bus. First, let me tell you about the tour. We're going to travel through the most historic parts of the city for about an hour, with lots of chances for you to take photos or just enjoy the wonderful buildings like the City Hall and the Royal Theatre. Then, we'll drop you off at the museum. You have about two hours there. At 11:30, we'll start for our next destination — the Stanley Market. You may buy some fruit and cheese from the marketplace and have a light meal in the park nearby. But please, please, please come back on time at 1:30 p.m. We can't wait for any latecomers. Now, I'll give you some instructions on safety.

There is a new reason to be extra careful over the holidays and the police are warning drivers about a new rule that was passed last week. Using a cellphone while driving is now considered as an illegal behavior. And it will result in heavy fines. We can all remember last year, when a repairman suffered a severe back injury when a green car struck him. And just two months ago, a waitress walking home from work was hit, breaking both of her legs. Most recently, a college student was knocked down at a crossing from careless driving. All incidents involved cellphones. You will be ticketed right away if you are caught using cellphones while driving. So, how will the police achieve this? Well, unlike a traditional road block, officers will be standing at crossings, monitoring drivers as they come to a stop. Previously, the police asked other people to call in and report other drivers, but it's not clear how effective that was. So, be careful when you are out. Not just for your own safety, but for others' safety as well.

For 35 years, the rich and famous came to John Harding's London shop to get their hair styled. His famous customers didn't know John's secret but they noticed he rarely answered the phone. That's because if he did, he might need to check the appointment book or write something down. And that was a problem because John was unable to read.
John grew up in a poor area. At school, he was in the worst class. He tried to hide his reading problem as well as he could. At 16, he took a job at a hair shop. He went to school in the evenings to learn how to cut hair and he won prizes for his skill later. Then he was offered a job at a high-class shop and there he met his wife Heather. She became one of the few people who knew John's secret. She helped him when reading was required. Aged 25, John successfully open the shop where he would stay for 35 years, but he still has the reading problem. At restaurants, he couldn't read the menu 8 years ago. John's wife died after 50 years of marriage. Without her help, John decided to try again to learn. He joined a group that uses volunteers to teach adults. John now reads newspapers like Daily Mirror and Daily Mail, because The Times is too difficult. John says there's a shortage of volunteers to teach reading. How does he know? W:The world is full of wonderful places, both natural and man-made.Easter Island lies in the eastern Pacific Ocean, 3,540 kilometers west of Chile. Jacob Roggeveen discovered the island in 1722 and called it Easter Island. In 1786, a Frenchman visited the island and then made a detailed map. In 1888, Chile took control of the island.
The most amazing sight on the island is the giant stone figures. One mystery about these figures is how the ancient inhabitants made and then moved them. As we all know, what they used were the simplest stone tools. It seems that lots of people pulled. Over the centuries, Easter Island has suffered from diseases, wars and climate changes. As a result, most of the native Polynesian identity has been lost. But the island's stone figures will keep people extremely interested in Polynesian history and culture for a long time.

W: Hello, everyone. Welcome to today's programme Culture Travel. Today I will talk about America. No matter where you go in the United States, you'll find one or more very good golf courses. Both men and women, young and old in America take part in this sport. Therefore, people are very likely to believe that golf is the most popular hobby in America. But as a matter of fact, it isn't. American football dates back to the 19th century. If you have ever been to a football game in America, you'd be surprised to see that the number of audience can be up to twenty thousand.
This, however, is not the most popular hobby, either. So, what is the most popular hobby in America? Most surprisingly, the most popular hobby with the largest group of people is home gardening. As we can see, some people grow flowers and vegetables and others are very fond of caring for the grass. With evergreen grass and beautiful flowers in the gardens, everyone seems to enjoy having a lively environment. Yes, home gardening is indeed the most popular hobby as it offers everyone the pleasure from nature.
