Many people cycle or take a bus in order to protect the environment. But did you know that taking a flight is one of the worst things you can do for the environment? Planes use a lot of gas, but the real reason that flying is so bad for the environment is a little more scientific. Fuel burns so high in the sky that the pollution can easily get trapped there forever! A round-trip flight across the U.S. usually takes five hours each way. And it causes the same amount of pollution as driving your car for the whole year! There are some environmental groups who are calling on people to stop flying completely. They advise people to take a train if they need to get somewhere far away. Other than that, long-distance travel should only be done in an emergency, the groups say. For businessmen who have to travel often for work, there is a solution. Certain "green investment" companies will put money into environmental projects. The amount of money will be equal to the "pollution cost" of the businessmen’s flights. Therefore, the plane trips won’t be considered to be affecting the environment in a negative way.
