W: I can’t think of anything to get for her. Do you have any ideas?

M: Maybe you could make her a sweater.

W: In two days? I don’t think so. I could definitely do a scarf, though.

M: I’d like to spend some extra time in Paris. So, maybe we can stay three nights in Paris and two nights everywhere else.

W: That’s fine with me. I’ve already been to Amsterdam.

M: You have? Are you sure you want to go there a second time?

W: Oh yes! It is such a wonderful city. I can’t wait to take you to some of the places I visited last time.

W: Don’t be silly — you’re one of his star pupils. Surely, he’s not going to fail you because you are ill. You     haven’t even missed a day all year as far as I remember.

M: Oh well, perhaps I will stay at home, just today. But could you do me a favor? Drive to school and deliver my project to Mr. Bell.

W: No problem. I promise you.

W: Billy, come to the office and we need to talk.

M: Yes, Mrs. Black.

W: Billy, I noticed you haven’t been paying as much attention as usual in class lately. What’s going on?

M: All right. I heard my parents talking recently. They were talking about moving because of my father’s work. The company wants him to manage an office in another city. So I’ve been worried about that these days.

W: I understand. You don’t want to have to start over in another place with a new school, new friends, and new     teachers.

M: I guess I just feel anxious about what might happen. I haven’t talked with my parents yet, but I don’t know why.

W: Well. As a clever and hard-working boy, you will have nothing to worry about if you do move to a new     school. And if you stay, you need to keep your grades up. Look, whatever happens, I’m sure that you will     be just fine.

M: It is so nice of you to say so.

W: But for now, if I were you, I would have an honest conversation with my parents.

Text 10

M: Good morning, everyone. I am Professor Smith, and I am responsible for your lab class this year. This class is intended as a necessary part of the course, which Dr. James will be in charge of. We will meet twice a week in this laboratory. The class begins at nine. I expect you to be on time. I do not intend to wait for latecomers or repeat what has already been covered if you miss the explanation.

Attendance is equally important. If you miss three lab classes, your name will be removed from the class list. No excuses. You can’t complete the course without completing lab classes.

Safety is key here. It is very important to keep things neat and clean, dress properly, and be careful. You shall not eat or drink here and you should always clean the table and wash your hands before and after the class. Long hair must be tied up. And, finally, any laboratory accident must be reported immediately.

I hope you’ll enjoy the laboratory. It’s a wonderful place but all these instructions are to be strictly followed. We will begin today by learning about the microphone.
