Text 1

M: We are going to do the general cleaning after school.

W: Oh, but we usually do it every Wednesday, so why don't we do it tomorrow just as usual?

Text 2

W: I won first prize in the National Writing Contest and I got this camera as an award!

M: It's a good camera! You can take it when you travel.

Text 3

W: Come on! We're going to be late.

M: No, we're not. There's no English class today. The teacher has a meeting. Let's have some coffee. The next class is an hour from now.

Text 4

M: Did you hear that Sam from the Paris office will be coming here?

W: Will he be visiting our office or just taking a vacation?

M: He'll be heading up our Boston office. How lucky he is!

Text 5

W: Andrew is partly right, but some information is still missing. Dan, can you help him out? You don't know, either? Matt, do you have the complete answer?

M: Yes, I believe I do, Professor Ragaway.

Text 6

M: Hey, Bea. I need some help piling these boxes. Would you please give me a hand?

W: OK. And I need some help tidying up the house. How about your helping me out after that?

M: OK. If you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours.

W: I know you don't like doing housework, but I'll help you with the boxes if you promise to return the favor.

M: OK. I'll even clean windows. If we behave ourselves, Mom will give us pocket money.

W: Hello, Bruce. I heard that you lived in Beijing for quite a while.

M: That's right, Tracy. I lived there for about six years while I did my master's and doctor's degrees. Why do you ask?

W: Well, I am flying to Beijing for a job interview next Friday. I will have several free days, so I plan to go out and see the city. Where do you think I should go?

M: Well, there are many places that are worth visiting, such as the Forbidden City and Tian'anmen Square.

W: Sounds great!

M: Oh, yes! Don't forget to spare a day to visit the Great Wall. That's something visitors should never miss!

W: Wow! I can't wait to go!

M: Is your sister Diana going with you?

W: No, she is going to Brazil on business next Thursday. She'll be there for about six days.

Text 8

W: Hello, welcome to The Daily Grind. What can I get for you?

M: Good morning! I actually have no idea what I want to drink today! Any recommendations?

W: Do you drink your coffee black? Or do you prefer to add cream, sugar, or milk to it?

M: I definitely do not drink it black! The taste is so strong!

W: OK. Do you like sweet coffee?

M: I guess so. To be honest, I'm not much of a coffee drinker. I've always been more of a tea drinker, but lately my friends have all started going out for coffee and juice. I feel like a fool when it is time to order because I have no idea what to get!

W: Coming right up! You can pick up your drink at the end of the bar. Have a great day!

M: Thanks for your help! Where is your tip jar?

W: Down at the end of the counter with the drinks.

M: Great! Have a great day!

W: Thank you for helping me this weekend, Dave. I know three pets are a lot to handle.

M: No problem. You would do the same for me. So what do I need to know?

W: This is Buster. He likes his spot under the dinner table. Cutie is probably sleeping on my pillow right now, and Chee-Chee is in the cage by the fridge.

M: Got it. What about their eating schedules?

W: Buster eats in the morning, afternoon and evening. Cutie is usually outside all afternoon catching mice. Feed her during the breakfast and dinner. Chee-Chee is easy. He just eats seeds.

M: Is there anything else I need to know?

W: Don't worry if you can't find Cutie. She goes in and out of the window whenever she wants. With Buster, you need to take him for a walk per day. There's a park nearby, and I usually take him once around the path.

M: I don't mind. I could get some exercise too. So when are you leaving?

W: Saturday morning. I fly home Tuesday night, but I won't get home until the following day. So you'll be all right?

M: Of course. Have a good time on your trip!

M: I discovered at an early age that I only did well in something if I enjoyed doing it. I didn't like maths at school so I never got good results, but sports was different. Now I work for Electra Bicycle, a company selling bikes. My first job after leaving school was in a bike shop. Then, I decided to go to college and study engineering, but I soon gave that up because I couldn't get enthusiastic about it. After that, I got a job working in a frozen food company. People there seemed to like the way I worked, as later they offered me the job of sales manager. I really enjoyed my time there and I managed to increase its sales greatly by improving customer service. I stayed with them for ten years before moving to Electra Bicycle.

I started working with the staff of Electra Bicycle, showing them how to deal with the customers. Then I was promoted to the job of training organizer in the USA. Now I'm here in the UK and I'm the general manager. Although we haven't introduced any new products yet, our sales figures have improved due to increased TV advertising. We'll open six new stores next year and although I'm busy, I enjoy feeling I'm part of the company's success story.
