Unit 5A

Text 1

W: Do you often eat out at restaurants?

M: No. I enjoy cooking at home. What about you?

W: I eat at restaurants pretty often. I'd rather cook and eat at home, too. But my work keeps me busy all the time.

Text 2

W: Try to start his breathing again, or he will die in five minutes.

M: Well, how can I start his breathing?

W: By using the mouth-to-mouth method.

Text 3

W: Are you interested in traveling?

M: Yes, but I haven't got much time with running the coffee shop. How about you?

W: I've visited many places. I work for magazines and newspapers, providing photos for them.

M: That sounds really wonderful.

Text 4

M: Will we reach Amsterdam today?

W: Probably not. We've been driving for five hours, and we still have four hours to go. We don't need to hurry, so let's stop here.

M: What a beautiful little town! Let's find a hotel and then get some dinner.

Text 5

M: Guess what, Mum! Tina won first place in the swimming competition this Sunday!

W: No wonder. She got trained 2 hours every day except Tuesday, when she had to take piano lessons.

Text 6

W: It was amazing, wasn't it? I liked the storyline and the characters were very convincing too.

M: They were. The actors were great — just right for the roles.

W: Mm, and the action scenes were thrilling — quite scary in fact.

M: I was sure they weren't going to survive when their car crashed near the end. What about the final scene, though? I couldn't make out what was going on with the main character's son. Did he just drive away and leave them all?

W: It wasn't obvious, was it? I think maybe he was going for help.

Text 7

M: Good evening, madam. How may I help you?

W: Good evening, sir. I went out to take part in a fire drill with my colleagues on Clifton Street. After I came home at 7:00 p.m., a thief had broken into my house.

M: Did he take anything?

W: Yes, he did. He took a piece of jewelry that is a gift my husband John gave to me last month. I found the thief had drunk a glass of milk and eaten some cookies.

M: Good.He must have left some fingerprints. And your name and address?

W: It's Kathy Baker. My address is 766 Waterford Street. Oh, one of my neighbors said she saw the thief — a man jumping out of the window. She said the thief ran away to Elm Street.

M: What does he look like?

W: He looks tall with long hair.

M: Okay. We will inform you as soon as we have any information about him.

W: Thanks a lot.

Text 8

W: I have no idea about how to finish the timetable.

M: You don't have to be very creative. It only needs to be standard and more or less the same every year. For instance, the sports day begins with the throwing event. The jumping event takes place before lunch.

W: Why?

M: That's because the school doesn't want the athletes to jump after eating. And the long-distance race takes place before the jumping event and after the throwing event.

W: And after lunch?

M: Actually, the school doesn't want any events to take place in that time. But athletes can practise for the next event.

W: Do you mean the 100m race?

M: Yes. It seems to be the most exciting event, so it takes place at the end of the day, which is around 5 p.m.

W: Thank you very much! You really help me a lot.

Text 9

W: Max, I want to buy Robert a pet for his birthday. But you know, our brother likes neither cats nor dogs. What do you think I should do?

M: His favorite is birds. How about buying a parrot for him?

W: I'm afraid it's not good. Mum hates keeping birds because they make a lot of noise.

M: Robert is also interested in little mice. What about buying him a mouse?

W: No, it's impossible. Don't you know that our sister Cathy has just got a pet cat?

M: Then why don't you buy him a rabbit?

W: But I think rabbits are smelly. What about a goldfish? They're very beautiful and easy to look after.

M: No, boys don't usually love goldfish. I suggest you buy him a snake. It's very unusual. I'm fond of that.

W: No, I don't think it's a good idea. You know, I'm terribly afraid of snakes.

M: I've got a good idea. Let's ask him and find out what he really likes and then we can go to the market to get one for him.

W: That sounds OK.

Text 10

M: Well, class, my last year of teaching high school has finally come. Many of my students have asked me not to retire, but I am getting old and have other things I would like to do. I will always need to teach, and now my new projects are going to take me to different parts of the world. First, I'll go to India. I plan to help some friends start a school for very smart students who come from poor families. There are many highly intelligent kids who don't get a chance to keep studying because they're poor. Our school will also get support from a China-based program that helps the families of these students, so the kids don't need to drop out of school to work. When this project gets going, my next stop will be Australia. I have always wanted to visit that country, but what really attracts me is a group that helps the native people earn college degrees. And after Australia, who knows? I'm sure I will find more educational projects to keep me busy!
