Unit 4A

Text 1

W: I'm not sure whether to buy a new car or simply find a second-hand one.

M: If I were you, I would buy a new one. Repairing cars will cost you a lot.

Text 2

M: Gardening is a good way of killing the time. It allows me to do something different from my office work.

W: That's nice. For me, it provides vegetables for family use.

Text 3

M: Shall we buy these magazines about home decoration before decorating our new house?

W: We could, but considering the information, don't you think they are too expensive?

Text 4

W: Now, please tell me exactly how this happened.

M: Well, I stopped immediately when the light turned yellow, but the car behind ran into me.

Text 5

M: Ms. Davis, I wonder if I could possibly ask for leave tomorrow morning.

W: What happened?

M: My father is in the hospital at the moment. I want to go and look after him.

W: Oh, I'm sorry to hear that. Go ahead, and just deal with your work when you return.

Text 6

M: Do you know about the party this weekend, Tina?

W: Yes, they are having a big one at the International House, aren't they? Are you going?

M: Of course. I enjoyed meeting lots of students from many other countries at the party last year. I certainly wouldn't miss it this year.

W: Are you going to cook anything?

M: Yes. I'm going to cook some Spanish-style rice.

W: I know a Japanese couple living in one of the on-campus apartments. They will let me use their kitchen so that I can prepare some Japanese dishes. Do we need to wear anything special?

M: No, it's just an informal gathering.

Text 7

W: Okay, Mr.Taylor, let's go ahead and begin.First of all, tell me about your last job.

M: Well, I worked for five years at Hi-Tech Computers.

W: Okay. Hi-Tech.How about your website writing skills? Oh, we are looking for someone to create and manage our company's website.

M: Umm…uh, website, website.Huh…I don't think I've read that book.

W: Huh? And what about the experience with making Flash?

M: Well…I think sometimes computers flash…if that's what you mean.

W: Okay, Mr.Taylor, I think I have all the information I need!

M: Oh, and I really like computer games.I play them every day.

W: Right, right.Thanks, Mr.Taylor.We'll be in touch.

Text 8

W: Hey, Alan! Where do you like to go on holiday?

M: I usually go to the beaches in Italy. I once went to Switzerland a few years ago. I liked that country. However, I still prefer places with beaches because I like swimming in the sea. What about you, Lily?

W: I sometimes go to the mountains in the north of Wales. My aunt lives there.

M: I've been there before. It is a wonderful place in the southwest of Britain. What do you usually do there?

W: Well, I go hiking in summer and in winter I go skiing there.

M: Wow, that sounds wonderful. By the way, do you like touring with a group of people?

W: No. I once went on a tour with some tourists. I didn't enjoy it because sometimes I couldn't do what I wanted.

M: I agree with you in some ways. I find if there is an experienced traveler in the group, you can save a lot of trouble. So I choose to tour with other travelers from time to time.

Text 9

W: Hello. Care for the Community. How can I help you?

M: Oh, good morning. I'm interested in doing some part-time work for your organization. My name is Philip Tailor. I'm a student at the University of Leicester.

W: Good morning, Philip. When would you be available to work? Days? Evenings?

M: Well, days would be difficult, as I have classes then. I am thinking maybe a couple of evenings a week, or maybe three. But no more than that.

W: OK. Philip, why are you interested in working for us?

M: Well, I major in Social Care Studies. I'm hoping to apply for a job in social care when I graduate, and this would give me some work experience in this field.

W: Great. And what makes you suitable for this kind of work, do you think?

M: Well, I have very good communication skills. That's my strong point, I think. And I'm a good listener. Sometimes you can help by just listening, you know.

W: I agree. Hmm, right. What I'd like to do, if it's OK with you, is to fix an appointment so we can meet and talk about this some more. It wouldn't be anything formal, not an interview or anything like that. Er, how are you fixed for Tuesday 9th September at 4:30?

M: Ah, I'm sorry. I have a lesson then. Would Wednesday be possible?

W: The 10th? Yes, that would be fine.

Text 10

M: May I have all your attention, please? We need to get this meeting started because we have a lot to do before graduation.Thank you all for electing me as your chairman and I will do my best to make sure we have a great graduation ceremony. I just need your help to get everything running smoothly.

You all have been selected by your departments to plan the graduation. You should all feel honored that your classmates think so highly of you. Right now a sheet of paper is going around that I need all to fill out. Please write down your name, telephone number, and what part of the graduation you would like to help organize. Please keep in mind that all parts of the graduation require a great deal of time and devotion. So please only sign up for a part that you have time for. When you have signed the paper with your name, telephone number and part, please place the paper on my desk. At our next meeting on Friday, we will break up into groups and get to work on everything. Start thinking about how you want to organize your small groups before then. OK. That's all from me. See you on Friday.
