Unit 2A

Text 1

M: You said you're a German? But your English is excellent. Where did you learn English?

W: In New Zealand.

M: Wow! You speak English so fluently that I thought you were from England.

Text 2

W: How was your holiday in the lakeside house?

M: It was great! We left our car on one side of the lake and went across it by boat. The only problem was that it was far from the local shop. Getting there turned out to be my job — on a bicycle!

Text 3

M: This is River Street. What number do you want to go to?

W: Let me get off there in front of that tree. That's fine.

Text 4

W: Let's go to the seaside this summer. I bet the children will like it. They've got tired of taking a road trip to another country.

M: That sounds like a great idea. And it'll give me a chance to enjoy surfing and stay away from work.

W: Yep. Okay then.

Text 5

W: Can we change the channel, Dad?

M: Not until this film has finished. I'm enjoying it!

W: But how can you be interested in a police story? I'm sure the quiz show that I want to watch is more exciting.

M: Not for me. But we can watch the football match together later if you like.

Text 6

M: I'm going to apply for a job at Joplin's. I heard they're paying $12 an hour. That's the best starting salary I've found!

W: Yes, that is a good salary, but their benefits are terrible. If I were you, I'd think twice before working for them.

M: How do you know so much about Joplin's?

W: My husband used to work there. They give no health insurance benefits to their part-time workers, but they're on call for all the major holidays!

Text 7

M: Did you see the novel Jim recommended?

W: No, I didn't. What is it about?

M: In the book, people have built a big space station which can hold about 10 thousand people. Then they try many ways to launch it and finally they make it.

W: Oh, that's really impressive. Is there anything else?

M: Just think! Astronauts live and do research work there.

W: Will they stay in space all their lives?

M: Of course not. People have gone to the moon and come back to earth again.

W: Amazing! But I wonder why you're interested in such things.

M: I've always been. I hope to go to the moon one day.

W: Oh, I see!

Text 8

W: Welcome to our program, Mr. Johnson. Congratulations on winning the Teacher of the Year Award.

M: Thank you, Emily. I'm more than happy to be here.

W: What inspired you to be a teacher, Mr. Johnson?

M: Well, I've always loved to learn, but I enjoy teaching others even more. It runs in the family.

W: Could you tell us what the best part of your job is?

M: Getting to know all of the different kids and communicating with them. I have always loved kids. So, I will always enjoy that part of my job.

W: Then, what do you hope to achieve by being a teacher?

M: My goal is to help my students develop awareness of their strengths, weaknesses, and learning needs, and to enable them to learn throughout their lives.

W: That sounds great.

Text 9

M: Hello, there. You look exhausted.

W: Hi. I can't stop for long. I still have a mile to run.

M: A mile? Wow! You really take fitness seriously.

W: Everybody should. Even on rainy days like this.

M: I suppose you're right. I see a lot of overweight people these days.

W: They are harming themselves by eating the wrong things and not doing exercise.

M: So how much running do you do?

W: Two miles a day, three times a week. It's an easy routine.

M: It doesn't sound easy to me. I suppose I should do some exercise and get enough sleep as well.

W: You really should.

M: On the plus side, I'm a healthy eater. I eat plenty of vegetables and no snacks.

W: At least you are making an effort. With a few small changes, you could have a healthy lifestyle.

M: You're right. I can't do much about my bedtime, but from tomorrow I am going to travel to work on my bike.

W: Swimming is good exercise as well.

M: Maybe I'll check out the local pool sometime.

Text 10

M: Attention, runners! Thank you for signing up to participate in the 10th Autumn Fun Run! At exactly 8 o'clock in the morning, our race will begin. Please line up according to how fast you ran in the practice run; everyone should have the number you got at the registry. Look for signs and follow them. Our course is exactly 10 kilometers long. Water stations will be available every two miles. Our volunteers will be at these stops, ready to give you sports drinks and food. We know that many runners love to run with music; however, it is not allowed during our race. Also, many hikers use our narrow tracks, and they may have dogs or small children. Therefore, to reduce the chance of injury for everyone, we ask you not to use headphones on our course at all. Our course will be taken down at noon. All runners and walkers should have completed the course by then. Please talk to one of our volunteers if you need any help. There're doctors at the starting and finishing lines until one o'clock. Also, photos of runners will be taken at the finishing line. And there are reporters who will interview the winners. Visit our website to view and purchase your race photos!
