Unit 6B

Text 1

M: Hello, my name is Jack. I need to get in shape. How do I register for the classes?

W: We'll need you to join the gym, and then you can find out which classes fit your schedule best.

Text 2

M: I don't have a library card. Do I need one?

W: You have to have one — only to take books out. You're OK if you just sit in one of the rooms reading.

M: Well then, I'll just read here. Thank you.

Text 3

W: The price of beef has increased a lot this year. Now a pound costs twenty dollars.

M: Yes, last year it was only half the price.

Text 4

W: The taxi is waiting downstairs. Please hurry up or we'll miss the train.

M: Wait a minute. I'll take a coat with me. I'm afraid the weather will change suddenly.

W: Come on!

Text 5

W: Are you going to Beijing to visit friends or have a tour?

M: Neither. I have been offered a job in Zhongguancun.

W: Congratulations.

Text 6

M: What do you usually do in your spare time?

W: I'm really interested in English movies, but my husband likes Korean TV plays. And you?

M: I like hiking, especially mountain hiking. Do you like it?

W: Not so much. Have you hiked in the Taihang Mountains?

M: Certainly, last year a few people in our office and I hiked in the mountains for a week.

W: Sounds interesting. Next time I will go with you.

M: How about the end of the month?

W: OK. That's a deal.

Text 7

W: Would you like to tell me something about your father? What does he like to do?

M: My father is an electrical engineer in a company. He likes taking photos in his free time and now he is taking a night class.

W: Oh, your father must be gifted in many ways.

M: Yeah. He is very easy-going and has many friends in my neighborhood.

W: To tell the truth, I also love photography.

M: That's great. Will you have a chat with my father?

W: What time?

M: He has meetings on Saturday and Sunday. He will be free on Friday and you can come to my home.

W: See you then.

Text 8

W: Hello! How are you today?

M: Hi, I'm feeling very nervous. I had an English test and I'm not sure what the result is.

W: It's no use worrying about it now. You've done your best and you can't change any of your answers.

M: That's true. I really should go home and prepare for tomorrow's test, but I'm feeling tired.

W: Let's go and get some coffee together. That will help you wake up again.

M: OK. I feel like sitting down and having a chat. How have you been recently?

W: Oh, you know me. I'm always happy. If I think I'm getting into a bad mood, I'll call some friends and have a chat with them.

M: That's a good idea. I usually stay at home alone and get increasingly sad.

W: I hate spending too much time staying at home. I'm always excited about going out to parties and meeting people.

M: Perhaps I'm too shy. I should go out more and not spend time worrying about tests.

Text 9

W: Hello, Ben! How was your weekend?

M: Great, thanks! I visited York with Helen and the kids. York is a really beautiful historic city and there are lots of old buildings. And my friend booked us a really nice hotel.

W: Oh? What did you do while you were there?

M: Well, we visited the old castle on Saturday. I love history and the kids enjoyed exploring all the different rooms. And we visited the museum on Sunday. It's so interesting. You can see what the town looked like in the past.

W: What did you do on Saturday evening?

M: I wanted to go to a football match, but there were no tickets. So we went to see a movie instead. The kids liked it, but I didn't. It was boring, to be honest.

W: What did you do for food?

M: Helen likes trying new food different from Italian food. So we planned to go to a Thai restaurant. Helen enjoyed it, but the kids didn't like the food, so we walked to a Chinese restaurant, further along the street.

Text 10

M: Look at this picture. It's the London Tea Trade Centre. As you can see, it is on the north bank of the river Thames. It is the centre of an important industry in the everyday lives of the British people. Tea is the British national drink. Every man, woman and child over ten years of age, has on average over four cups a day, or some one thousand five hundred cups annually. About 30 percent of the world's exports of tea makes its way to London. And Britain is by far the largest importer of tea in the world.

Now in the second picture, you can see how tea is tasted in the Tea Trade Centre before it is sold. Here, different types of tea are tasted by skilled tea tasters before they are sold at each week's tea sale. It's amazing to see them! Over a hundred kinds of tea are laid out in a line on long tables. The tasters generally taste tea with milk, since that is how the majority of British people drink their tea. The tasters move down the line with surprising speed, tasting from a spoon and deciding what is a fair price. After that, let's see the last picture...
