Unit 5B

Text 1

W: Can you pick up cold medicine from the drugstore?

M: You should have told me earlier. I would have gone after work. The store isn't open at this time.

Text 2

W: I'm thinking of buying my son a pair of blue jeans for his birthday. Last year, I bought him a pair of black shoes as a gift.

M: If I were you, I would buy a red sweater.

Text 3

M: How are you getting to Beijing, by air or by train?

W: By train. It leaves at 7:00 pm and arrives in Beijing at 5:00 tomorrow morning.

Text 4

M: Didn't you say you wanted to stop drinking coffee for a while?

W: I did. I was trying to drink tea or juice each morning instead of coffee. But it didn't go so well.

Text 5

W: Can you make an appointment with the doctor for me? I had a tooth pulled last month, but now I'm having problems with another tooth. It hurts a lot.

M: OK, I need go, too. My teeth need to be cleaned.

Text 6

M: It's Saturday tomorrow. Do you have any plans, Mary?

W: Busy as usual. I will send Annie to her piano class at nine tomorrow morning, and then take Michael to hospital. Besides, I will make a birthday cake for Lynn. Tomorrow is her 5th birthday.

M: Why isn't John giving a hand?

W: An international meeting is going to be held in London next week. He is leaving tomorrow, and will be back in two weeks.

M: I see. Give me a call if you need any help.

Text 7

W: Hi, Mike, are you having a salad sandwich with milk for lunch?

M: Yeah, and my favorite fried potatoes. Do you want some?

W: No, thanks, I just ate my lunch. Do you bring your lunch to work every day? I remember you used to eat out.

M: Yes. I realized I was spending too much money eating out and not eating very healthily. Preparing meals at home seemed like the best solution.

W: That makes sense.

M: I thought cooking was boring. I've been trying new dishes. It's fun to experiment in the kitchen, although others may think it's really challenging.

W: That's great.

Text 8

M: So, Lisa, what makes you believe that you're the best person for the job?

W: Well, I have five years of experience in a similar position at another company.

M: And why are you looking to leave that company?

W: Well, the pay is better, but I'm looking for a place where I can grow.

M: You think that is our company?

W: Yes, one of my friends works for you. She told me about the role. She's always talking about how the company supports her in learning new skills and pushing her to advance.

M: We do have a training school and we expect our employees to try and better themselves.

W: Well, I'm definitely eager to learn.

M: We also offer flexible working hours if that suits you.

W: It would. I have two girls aged 3 and 4.

M: Lovely. We like to think of ourselves as a family, so as long as you do the work, we're happy that you set your own schedule.

W: That sounds perfect.

Text 9

M: My history professor says I should think about a job in politics. But I don't think I'd make a good politician.

W: Why not?

M: You know me. I'm not good at dealing with people. And politicians have to work with people all the time.

W: That's true. So what do you think you want to do?

M: I think I will be a good artist. I love painting pictures.

W: That reminds me of a problem I'm having. You know my parents have a restaurant, right? They want me to be the manager.

M: And you want to?

W: No way. A restaurant manager has to manage other people. It'd be terrible. I'm too disorganized. Honestly, I want to be a teacher because I like working with kids, and I'm good at it.

M: That's true.

Text 10

M: Good morning, everyone. Welcome to your first painting class. My name is Kevin, and I will be your teacher for the next 12 weeks. You are from all walks of life, and for most of you, this is your first time painting, or even your first time doing anything artistic. Don't worry. This course is designed to teach you the basics of drawing. In the first two weeks, you will get familiar with some very important drawing techniques, as well as understand how to use the equipment. In week three, I will start giving you weekly homework, so you can improve your techniques outside of these classes. It's entirely your choice to complete the homework or not. It is not a course requirement, but obviously, it will really help you progress. After week eight, you have to hand in a final piece of work. This artwork will require a lot of experimentation. After the twelfth week, we will hold a show at a local gallery, which both you and your family are welcome to attend.
