Text 1

M: What did you think about Forest Adventure?

W: It was fun, but not as great as I thought it would be. The camerawork was nice and the characters were well developed, but the story was a bit too common.

Text 2

M: Emily, you seem really excited. Did something good happen?

W: Even better! I just got the latest issue of the magazine, and guess what? My research paper is printed in it.

M: Wow, that's great. It must be the paper about wildlife protection, right? Congratulations!

Text 3

W: What are you watching?

M: A Mr. Bean show. It's old, but it's really funny.

W: I love the old shows. Good shows never go out of style!

Text 4

W: Hello, Jason? This is Megan.

M: Hi, Megan. How are you?

W: I'm fine, but Jack is sick. He's got a sore throat and a cough and he's staying home from school. So he can't go for your piano lesson this evening.

M: Oh, I'm sorry to hear that. I hope he'll be better soon.

Text 5

M: A friend of mine said adding beans and cheese to this potato dish made it taste better, but I'm not sure if you'll like it!

W: You're a wonderful chef, but I think you've forgotten I react badly to milk-based foods.

M: Oh, sorry, I did forget!

Text 6

M: Thank you for meeting with me, Mrs. Anderson.

W: It's good to see you too. Could you tell me a bit about yourself?

M: Yes. I graduated from Otis College in June 2018 with a master's degree in toy design. At the same month I worked at Mattel, and 2 years later I was promoted to marketing manager.

W: What achievement did you make?

M: The sales grew by three times. I was the sales champion for four years.

W: So why did you quit your job?

M: It's been a great experience but I've run out of room to grow there and I'm looking for new opportunities.

W: Great. I will call you back in three days about our final decision.

M: Okay, thank you very much.

Text 7

M: Cynthia, would you mind helping me out again? I'm so sorry to bother you so often.

W: Of course not. It'll be a pleasure. And you helped me rent this place, so I always want to do something to thank you.

M: Don't mention it. At that time, my uncle was leaving for Chicago, and I just recommended the house to you. It's his house and it was his decision. I didn't expect I'd work in Houston and end up living with you.

W: You've been most kind. So what can I do to help you?

M: Ah, yes. As you can see, I badly need a haircut, but I'm new here and I don't know any barbershops.

W: There are no barbershops around here. The nearest one might be about a 15-minute car ride away. Besides, even the simplest cut will cost you about 30 dollars. If you just want something simple, I can do it for you. I used to cut my little brothers' hair when I lived at home in Birmingham.

M: Wow, it sounds like I can save some money. Okay, please help me.

Text 8

W: What's troubling you, Max?

M: Tara, I have a biology test on Friday and I'm worried I might not pass.

W: Why? You always do well in biology.

M: The test is not too hard, but I have so much information to remember. Here are my notes from today.

W: These aren't notes! This is an entire essay! No need to copy everything! Look at this sentence by you: Plants use sunlight to make food.

M: That's important information.

W: But you don't need to write it all out like that. Look at what I write.

M: Oh, that's great, Tara! The S stands for “sunlight”, and the F for “food”. Very clever. And the leaf symbolizes “Plants”; the arrow means “make”.

W: Exactly. Notes should have just a few key words. Skip the rest. Try using simple drawings. If you take notes like this, you'll reduce your pages from five to just one or two!

Text 9

M: It was an interesting presentation by Professor Letitia, wasn't it?

W: Yes, practical demonstrations certainly helped, but only up to a point. Personally, I prefer visiting galleries. It is exciting to look at the sculpture. How amazing it is to make an object out of stone, wood, or clay!

M: I know what you mean. I really enjoyed the visit to the museum the other day. I particularly admired those Roman statues though the gold deer were impressive and the huge flowers were so special. Copying them, or doing something even slightly similar will be too much for me.

W: Absolutely! There are so many different things we need to study more. We've done plenty of work on decorating surfaces. I also like that lesson on shaping muscles. But it's using tools that I need more guidance on.

M: Have you decided what type of sculpture you're going to do?

W: Well, the teacher was talking about choosing a subject we're truly interested in. So I might do an animal of some kind.

M: That sounds difficult.

W: Well, yes. The teacher talked to me about what I need to observe carefully before I start. And she said the greatest attention should be paid to its movement.

Text 10

M: Many of you may sit at a desk all day. You worry about your health. Some evidence suggests a relationship between health problems and the time we spend sitting. But sitting at a desk may not be as bad as sitting in front of a television after work. This finding comes from a U.S. study led by Jeanette Garcia, a researcher at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. “We've been hearing that sitting is as bad as smoking,” she said. The study followed close to 3,600 African-American adults. Almost one-third of them watched TV for more than four hours a day. Nearly one-third of them spent between two and four hours a day sitting in front of the TV. The rest watched TV for less than two hours a day. Compared to people who watched TV for less than two hours daily, those who spent more than four hours watching TV were 49% more likely to have a heart attack. Actually, doing physical activities is definitely beneficial. For example, walking to work should be encouraged if your company is close to your home.
