Text 1
M: The sun hasn't set in the west yet. Why are you having supper so early?
W: This isn't my supper but lunch. I was so occupied at noon and I had no time to eat anything.
Text 2
W: Hey, I just got here. What's the plan for today's session?
M: Hi, today we will focus on lower body strength. We'll start with some warm-up exercises and then move on to leg presses.
Text 3
W: It's nearly eight. If you want to catch the nine o'clock train, you'd better go now.
M: Don't worry. I'll drive to the station.
W: In that case, let me go with you. And you drop me at the city center. I'll go to the open market.
Text 4
W: You look happy.
M: I am. I had my interview today.
W: So it went well?
M: Yes. The manager said that my communication skills are great.
Text 5
M: Let's paint this wall yellow and reposition the bed to the window.
W: OK.
M: Susie said our curtains were too dark. Why not replace them with bright ones?
W: Well, I don't have to factor in all people's suggestions.
Text 6
M: Where are my glasses? I can't find them.
W: That's a problem.
M: I should have some in a brighter color — yellow or blue maybe — then I could find them easily. Brown is too dark.
W: You should buy one of those strings so you can wear glasses round your neck when you don't have them on.
M: I don't like them, because they make me look old. I'm only 28 — almost too young to be married!
W: Well, if your colleagues see you wandering around looking for your glasses, they might assume you are far older.
M: Yes. Tomorrow I'll get one of those strings...What's the place that sells strings?
W: Are you losing your memory as well?
Text 7
W: Aren't you ready yet? We have to leave soon, you know. The rain out there is starting to come down hard and we are likely to be caught in traffic later.
M: I know. Just give me a second. I have to take this paper up to Mr Kim's office first. Why don't we meet at the gate in five minutes? This way I can go back to my office to get my coat before we leave.
W: All right, Bob, but hurry up, please. This is our first meeting with Mr Roe. I don't want to give him the wrong impression by being late.
M: Don't worry, we still have plenty of time. Besides, we can take the subway so you don't have to worry about getting stuck in traffic.
W: Okay, good idea.
M: I'll be quick. Do you have the files for the meeting?
W: Yes, I put the folder in your bag this morning.
M: Perfect.
Text 8
W: Hello.
M: Rachel, tell us about your day.
W: Well, it all starts with a lot of post we get. We often get artists sending in photographs of their work to see if we'd be interested in displaying it.
M: So you are busy all day.
W: Yes. Sometimes I spend nearly all day on the phone and about fifty percent of the time with artists. We have an art show here about every two weeks.
M: And what's the best part of the job for you?
W: The really rewarding thing for me is that you never know how a day is going. Some days it'll be really quiet, while other days it's really busy and you don't know what you're going to have to deal with. Of course I find great pleasure. Spending my days being surrounded by beautiful works of art, I am satisfied.
M: Thank you Rachel.
Text 9
M: Hi, Susan. How are you? I've been wondering when I would run into you. What are you busy with?
W: Nice to meet you here, Tim. I'm buying some New Year gifts for those who work with me. But it's really a headache.
M: Maybe I could give you some advice. Firstly, you'd better divide them into different groups: Who are the people that are your friends as well as your workmates? And who are the people you do not know well but you see pretty much there?
W: OK, then what should I do?
M: For the friends, you can give them personal gifts. Do they like chocolate?
W: This is what I always give, but I know Mary is on a diet.
M: Does she like fruit or coffee? Or does she like flowers like other girls? Anyway, think of a gift that you know your friend would like.
W: Well, I think fruit is suitable for her. How about the rest of them?
M: Leave cards in their mailboxes or on their desks.
W: New Year cards?
M: Yes, you can afford that. More importantly, it shows them that you are thinking of them.
W: Thank you for your suggestion, Tim. You really have saved me and my money as well.
Text 10
W: Sit down, everyone. And put your books away. We won't need them. Our class today will be different. To start with, I'd like to thank everyone for being kind to each other. I always notice everyone's caring behaviour towards other classmates.
I'm talking about being polite and how it makes life better for everyone. I was lucky to learn these simple rules from my father when I was your age. These rules improved my life in school and at work, so I want to share them with you all as well.
First, never make fun of others for making mistakes. Second, always let people speak and listen to them closely. And most importantly, treat others the way you want to be treated. Don't worry about writing these down. Instead, I'll share a piece of paper with these rules listed. Before we review the next rules, I'd like some of you to present a story to the class about a very polite person you know.
