Unit 2B

Text 1

W: When I'm 55, I will quit my job and travel the world.

M: That means you have twenty years to go.

Text 2

W: Hey, I've just looked over the list you sent me. What do you mean by party stuff?

M: Oh, just a few things like balloons, decorations and other items that cost no more than 20 dollars.

Text 3

M: What would you like to be in the future? If I were you, I would be a singer. You've got such a beautiful voice.

W: I wouldn't like to be a singer, but I'd like to become a music teacher to teach children to sing.

Text 4

M: It sounds far from here to the zoo. How much does it cost?

W: The charge is $10 for you and your child gets a 30% discount.

Text 5

W: Hey, Sam, you look extremely happy today. Any good news?

M: Hi, Tina, my sister just gave birth to a baby girl and I'm thinking of getting a nice baby bottle.

W: That sounds like a wonderful idea.

Text 6

W: Come in and take your seat. So what can I do for you?

M: I'm feeling a bit tired. My arms and legs ache. And I've a runny nose. I took my body temperature before I came here. It was 38.8 degrees Celsius.

W: Well, it's a little high.

M: So what should I do?

W: You need to take some medicine, drink much water and have a good rest. Also, don't forget to wear a mask when you are in the company in case you spread it to others.

M: It's no wonder that my best friend has a temperature as I do. He accompanied me last night.

Text 7

M: Hello, Molly. You're not working in the cafe this afternoon?

W: Actually, I've given up the job. Yesterday was my last day.

M: Really? That's a bit unexpected. The workers there always seem quite happy and relaxed. Or you didn't get along with the boss?

W: That wasn't the problem. It was me. I was just getting far behind with my studies.

M: Have you been worried about this for a long time then?

W: Well, no. Last term I was able to keep up, and my marks were fine. But there's so much to do now, such as writing longer essays.

M: Sure, but I never thought of you finding it difficult, like I often do! All the way, you've been at the top of our group and you always appear so confident in lectures.

Text 8

M: Hi there, Monica, what are you up to?

W: Oh, I'm reading this really interesting article about a woman called Helen, who set up an eco-team.

M: An eco-team? I've never heard of that before. What do they do exactly?

W: Well, an eco-team is a group of people who get together to learn about how they can lead more environmentally friendly lives. So they do things like reusing their old plastic bags when they go shopping.

M: Oh, I always reuse mine.

W: Sounds great. The team also tries to cycle or walk to the shops instead of going by car.

M: Well, that's mainly because the shops are so near the university.

W: The team also tries to eat healthy food, so they go together to markets and buy green food. There's a farmer's market once a week on Saturdays just outside the town. We could go and take a look this weekend.

M: Great idea.

Text 9

M: Hi there, Alicia! You were on a sailing course down at the harbor, weren't you?

W: That's right. It was only a two-day course. The instructor began by teaching us safety rules, which was necessary. And then on the first morning we learned how to open the sails and how to turn the boat. The water wasn't as calm as it looked. I lost my balance a few times!

M: Sounds fun. I'd love to learn to sail.

W: Well, they run courses once a month, but I don't have any brochure, so just let me check the website here. OK, so my course was on the 4th and 5th of August. Now you could sign up for the next one on September 1st.

M: I think I could do that.

W: Well, let me give you the contact information of the course leader. His name is Jon Galloway.

M: OK, got it.

W: And here is his number.

Text 10

W: Good morning, Vancouverites! It's your favorite weathergirl Lily with this month's weather report, and what a month it's going to be! What would a Vancouver winter be without your jeans and shoes getting wet? That's right, folks. It is going to be extremely wet over the next few days, so please dress appropriately, keep dry and try to avoid catching a cold. If you have an umbrella, don't leave home without it. If you don't own one, you should probably buy one fast! But don't worry. I've got some good news as well. Winds from the north will die down over the next month. There will thankfully not be a cold wind alongside all that rain. For the following month, we can expect a lot of sunshine and little wind, with the average temperature going up by 10 degrees. Remember what I always say: when the temperature gets down to five, pack a jacket and stay alive. Thanks for listening. Next is Jen with a local news update, and then stay tuned for Jimmy the Gem with sports.
